I'm semi-competent when it comes to electronics/etc, just never really got into the ps3 much because of cost/etc.

Now I'm looking to get a PS3, and am a little lost as what to buy... So many options.

    slim vs fat
    all the different HD versions
    all the different firmware versions
all the different "comes with <insert game(s)/accessorie(s)>"

I'd "like" the "other OS" functionality, but I'm half-way expecting that to come soon b/c of the "int getRandomNumber {return 4;}" stuff thats been going on lately

    I would need/want Back-ups to play.

I would want to purchase the best hardware (least failure rate/etc), so preferably new

I was thinking the 320GB with the move included in it, but thats only b/c it 'might' be fun in the future with better games

    Thanks for the help.

take an old 60 or 80 gb version and insert a new hdd.
    why?
    - sd/mmc/memory stick cards
    - 4 usb ports
    - ps2 support
    - easier to put in a new hdd

You don't need anything special. You probably just want the slim model available on the shelves now with the large hd's. The slim model is just as good if not better and fits in places better because it is smaller. The slim model is going to be just as easily hacked unless Sony is able to pull some miracle from it's ass and it's "series of network updates" is successful
