... To finaly use the power of ps3 for real.

I mean, I wish I could play my 1080p movies with subs and all, I wish I could have a solid mp3 player that would allow me to easy change playlists and queue everything I want on the fly...

Dude, the xbox 1 had that, could play all the top of the top media files, years ago!

We need you pro undeground devs to finaly bring the ps3 up and make it a true media center!

I have one question. Did you even used your PS3?

I mean, not to be a dick but the Xbox had no support for anything.

Go download Tversity and read the fking manual dude.

streaming through tversity or media server is too limiting for 1080p resolution. we need direct support for mkv files and such.

Learn to use ps3 media server correctly.

Mkv is just a container, most contain x264 video. The PS3 can playback x264 video just fine, just not in the mkv container. Solution? Use ps3 media server with tsMuxer.

If you are using tsMuxer, there is no transcoding done, the original video source is just remuxed (and the audio is transcoded on the fly if necessary) into a container the PS3 can understand. This means it can be done on the fly (instead of taking hours to transcode the HD video), that there is 0 quality loss, and 0 increase in bitrate. Typical 720p rips will stream just fine over a solid 802.11g connection, though 1080p would probably require Ethernet.

The biggest reason no dev is working on this, other than that coding it would hard, is because there's really no reason for it. Run PS3mediaserver as a daemon/service with tsMuxer and that fixes 99.9% of everyone's problems (the only one's that this doesn't help are the people watching stuff with subtitles, but who wants to read while trying to watch something?)

edit: If none of these solutions are good enough for you, there is plenty of software freely available that will convert an mkv to an mp4. I've written a script myself that will convert it. It takes only minutes to convert a 1080p mkv into a 1080p mp4, since again, there's no need to transcode the x264 video, it can simply be remuxed into a new container.

Exactly, Thank you! why even reinvent the wheel?

These are my pref tools for dealing with mkv flies:
mkvtoolnix -- Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows

Put all your video files and music in a home server. You can be even access it remotely. Welcome to the 21st century!

He means the Xbox once modded.

What he fails to mention is that XMBP (later merged and became XBMC) did not pop up a week after the xbox was modifiable, it didnt play HD stuff (well it will start it, but its too low spec) and in the early days XBMP was a little primitive, its fantastic now, but it takes years to get to that kind of usability.
Make sure you butter the non reflective side of your CD's / DVD's and Blu-Rays so that when you drop them, they land butter side down thus preventing scratches.

actually xbmc was running on a ps3 as of may last year but development died out before the jailbreak craze. nobody seems to have revived it.

Yea, the xbox once modded, could play any and all formats except HD format....

But, I found this while looking for XBMC for PS3

Me and Themaister have been working on a Mplayer port - it already works on PS3, but the current problem is that H264 is damn slow. We're already using a shader for the YUV-to-RGB conversion, so that takes some of the load off the PPU. We don't use the SPEs due to lack of experience on that front, although to get anywhere we would obviously have to.

We will need some more experienced devs to help us out if we're going to make some progress on this.

How come this isn't news somewhere, or front paged as a call for help to other devs

(Side note, this is probably the first time, I've read devs working together in the PS3 scene, instead of talking shit to each other and having a bitch fit in IRC)
