Has anyone tried a 12.5 mm drive "without" the drive cage? I wonder if it would fit then? Of course you wouldnt want to knock your ps3 around to much afterwards.

a member in the scorpio blue thread said he cut out one side of the cage and it fitted.

Today i tried to connect a 2TB WD as internal. I used a Xecuter HDXT.
After formating the 2TB to my computer as FAT32 ( after format it had 1.8TB free) i connect it to PS3.
When i power the PS3, it asked me to format it again. After the format the PS3 restarted and it was just black screen. After 20min i close the power and reopen the PS3 , but still nothing black screen.
I thought that it was the cable or the power so i change the 2TB with a 500GB to check. Ps3 asked me to format the disk. And after the reboot it was working fine.
So i dont think it can handle 2TB internal. maybe 1TB or 1.5TB ?

I believe the max size for internal is 9.5mm. I don't know about removing the drive cage. There are some 1TB internal drives that will fit but for the most part it's 750GB maximum for internal due to the restriction in size allowing it to fit.
HYBRID MAN!

I think your issue is that the update installed part of the firmware onto your harddrive, now you've removed that harddrive and now it wont boot. I think I read the fix somewhere to re-install the update on the new drive...
I called BS that 1TB is the max. It's been proven many times with 1.5TB. You doing it wrong reldas.

I imagine a bunch of you already have a WD 2TB drive, but unfortunately they aren't very good drives. They have a tendency to lose the ability to buffer data. I've had it happen to two separate drives, and WD doesn't recognize it as a problem. It has nothing to do with improper usage; as I know what i'm doing, but look up that drive and see what people have to say about it suddenly becoming and staying extremely slow. I'm talking like 3mb/sec transfer speeds slow.
