    Hello.

I'm gonna ask this because I'm new to this:

1.- The only way to transfer backups to the PS3 HD is through FTP?, can't just transfer Data directly from an external HD to PS3 HD?

2.- Can the PS3 read a Security Copy storaged in another blueray Disc in order to copy its Data to the PS3 HD so I can run it later?

3.- I know we can't run games bigger than 4GB through external HD, If I'm not wrong this is due that FAT32 can handle files bigger than 4gbs, but could it be possible in the future to use NTFS to play games from external HD to PS3?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. You can transfer the backups from an external to the internal drive. This can be done through any homebrew file manager and I do believe most if not all Backup Managers.

    2. I don't quite get what your saying

    3. Whilst it is true that the Fat32 file size limitation limits single FILES to less than 4gb you can play games over 4gb so long as none of its individual files exceeds 4gb. As of now I do believe there are methods to split files larger than 4gb and still have them work and I think this can be done with Open Manager or any of its variants.

Whilst NTFS is a possibility I wouldn't put your hopes into it because no one knows when it will be done

    Hope this helps

    Thanks a lot HyperGamer!

-Can someone else confirm if Open Manager or any other variant can handle backups from an external HD biggern than 4GB without errors?

-I don't get why PS3 can handle games bigger than 4GB and an external HD can't (assuming this is completely true).

Last question, I want to buy a 500GB HD but I'm thinking that an internal HD would be better than an external HD when talking about longer durability, is this supposition correct? Or both can last equal longer? I have read many reviews from externals HDs that just stop working after a few months this seems to be more rare with interanls HD.

    Thanks ...

The problem with FAT32 isn't that a game can't be over 4gb, it's that an individual file can't be over 4gb. Take CODBO for example. The game is 11GB, but has no individual file over 4GB so it can be played on external just fine. Now, let's say we're dealing w/ GT5. That game is around 18GB (depending on which version you have), but has a single file that is 11GB. So, this game cannot be played off of external because of the FAT32 4GB file limitation.

As for your HDD question. That's completely your decision. I'm a person that doesn't have any games that have files over 4GB, so I did the external solution. That might not be the same for you. Check out PS Jailbreak Compatibility List - Home to see if your games work from internal or external mostly. Then make your decision.

    Thanks chesh!

The explanation about the file size and why they can't run using FAT32 was very helpful, now I got it.

But taking back your example of GT5, you said it can't be played using an external HD but can it be played using PS3's internal HD?, if this can be done then why internal HD plays it and external HD can't, both use FAT32 If I'm not wrong.

The PS3's internal drive uses ext3 so it can support files larger than 4GB, whereas your external drive MUST be formatted in FAT32 which has a single file limitation of 4GB. As Chesh stated earlier, GT5 has a file that is 11GB which wouldn't work on an external because of filesystem limits.
