USB drives don't work on PS2 games on PS3

I have a CECHA backwards compatible PS3 and i'm trying to play games from a USB HDD or SMB share with OPL. My Swap Magic disc will boot, and it loads uLaunchElf from my VMC.

uLaunchElf will not detect any of my USB thumb drives though, even the same thumb drives that are detected on my real PS2 and on my 80GB software emulation backwards compatible PS3.

To make everything even more confusing, the 60GB PS3 will not boot any ELF's besides uLaunchElf. It won't boot Open PS2 Loader, USB Extreme, Etc. Even though my PS2 and 80GB PS3 will boot the same files.

Is the Emotion Engine in my PS3 broken somehow? What else could be the problem? This is driving me crazy.

EDIT:
I wasn't sure if the firmware on my PS3 was causing the problems (it was on rogero 2.05) so I went to OFW 3.55 and kmeaw and the problem still exists.

strange that it wont read any other ELF's but there is a trick!
make a folder called SWAPMAGIC on the root of the usb (delete everything else or it will take long or hang).
then insert OPL into that folder (or any other elf) (ONLY insert one ELF at one time, this means that you cant have two ELFs in that folder)
and rename it to SWAPMAGIC.ELF . if i remember correctly use the boot 0 option

Yeah I know about all of that. an elf named SWAPMAGIC in the SWAPMAGIC folder will just boot automatically after swapmagic loads, you name them smboo0, smboot1, etc. if you want more than 1.

Like I said though, it won't recognize any of my USB drives, in swapmagic, codebreaker, or ulaunchelf. The way I boot ulaunchelf is having it named swapmagic so that swapmagic will auto load it.

(Almost everytime I try to post on this site, or quote anybody, it tells me that I need at least 30 posts to post links. There are not links! It's just a period followed by 3 letters to show the name of a file!
