Till i get my new HDTV FullHD TV screen i have temporarily been using my 22" PC Monitor as my screen for my PS3.

The Native resolution is 1680x1050 and the ps3 supports 1280x720 for most of the games.

I have upscale option set to off on my PS3 and it seems as though the black bars are more than they should be.

I'm almost getting 2.35:1 which should mean great distortion.

I think what i'm getting is 1680x720. Since the ps3 gets the 720 vertical and it doesnt care from there to correct the width.

What can i do about it?

Thanks for posting this, I was going to do the same since I got a PS3 for christmas and am still waiting for my new LCD TV to get here and was going to try connecting the PS3 to my 22" LCD monitor. So you saved me the trouble and now I think I'll just wait for my TV haha.

It's not that bad if you dont have the patience to wait for your new TV.

I set up my hdmi cable to output 720p and then set the upscale to full and i also enable full rgb colour support, and it's not as it was before.

It's not optimal either especially comapred to the FullHD TV's but it's a temporary fix.

BTW i want to ask, is there still distortion, or can the playstation upscale graphics to Monitorsnative resolution without aspect ratio distortion?

cool.. well maybe I might do this, since I have 3 more weeks of waiting for my new LCD. I was doing some reading and apparently my Dell E228WFP 22" monitor is compatible. I just need a DVI-D to HDMI converter or adapter.

This may be an aspect ratio issue, if your monitor's native rez is 16:10, then there will always be distortion.

My Graphics Card already had the converter so I only needed to get the HDMI cable.

Well since i'm referring to graphics, they can be reproduced in various resolutions. It's not like movies were the resolution is fixed, and anything other than original AR, results in distortion.

The environment can be recreated to fit the screen. That's why in PC games you get to choose from so many different resolution combinations.

I'm just asking if the ps3 is programmed to handle upscaling in various aspect ratios.
