You can simply put the movie on a flash drive or external hard drive and copy it over to the ps3 under the Video section of the XMB

You can also play it straight from the external device. And Im not sure if the PS3 has native support for mkv... If not Use Showtime

I personally like PS3 media server, easy to transfer supported files, or just stream from your pc. I'm not 100% sure, but i don't think you can ftp movies...something to do with folder naming.

Thanks was able to ftp movies to hdd0 in created movies folder and run them from showtime. MKV file were sticky at best but avi files ran just fine. I couldn't find a way to make them fit the screen though which was kinda sucky. 50 inch and only the middle of the screen shows the movie in showtime.
