Upgrading PS3 Firmware Without BluRay Drive ?
Upgrading PS3 Firmware Without BluRay Drive ? –
09-22-2010,04:55 PM
I tried many ways but somehow i couldn't do it.
It's a PS3 CECHB01 on FW 2.60 and missing the Blu Ray Drive n' Controller Board.
I tried a couple of Drives and controller boards i got here and even
tried a fully working bluray drive but nothing !
This PS3 stops updating firmware at about 61 % to be exact.
I tried to upgrade to 2.70 ( stops @ 61% & giving that error: 8002F14E )
Also tried the 3.41 and it gives that screen where you gotta agree the TOS,
but the strange thing is that there was no text at all and the DualS 3 controller wouldn't respond only charging with usb cord.
I even bought this a while ago: SONY PS3 Blu-ray DVD Drive PCB Logic board KEM-400AAA it didn't work either.
Any help is appreciated, and do you think in the future, with the scene
progressing it will be possible to fix this ?
Would a future CFW could possibly bypass the need of a Drive in there ?
I would love to even put a normal CD/DVD Drive instead that Bluray crap lol.
or a PS1 Drive ahaha.

Without the original daugtherboard to the bluray board you are SOL.
The reason it's stopping (in theory at least) is at that moment of the install it is attempting to install firmware to the bluray itself. If the original bluray daugtherboard is not present then it cannot install it, and this leads to the error.

that's what i understood, but do you think with the scene progressing fast,
they will be able to bypass that stuff ?
so it could update just firmware w/o checking the drive board?

I think you might have some luck if you find a another daughter board out of a playstation which was manufactured very close to the same date as that console.
Might be a old wives tale, but i heard that it works.

I don't think it'll work because each drive, like the HDD, has a unique encryption key.
The authentication procedure itself is done through the use of a per Blu-Ray drive key pair, one being located on the drive controller itself while the other is stored encrypted in the playstation 3's EID area located on NAND. This key is also used while updating the drive which firmware's will be physically re-encrypted using that very same key and stored that way. As such you cannot swap a drive controller board from one ps3 to another, at least on earlier "fat" models.

When you have a question google got the answer.

Out of literally hundreds of attempts I've had it work once by doing a swap.
But according to Gary you can use any compatible daughterboard to finish updating it (if I read his post right, I never personally confirmed if it works or not) if you can find one. Just remember, it still won't read disks.

hmmm i got a couple of daughterboard here, do you think i should try them all ?
and does it matter if the drive is attached to the board or will it be ok without ?
i don't care if it reads disks or not, i just want to update
also what board will be compatible with that ps3 ?

That's the first version, so the daugtherboard will likely have a metal shield that attaches to it, and on the side has a yellow connector for the CD sensor.
I'm unsure if it needs to be plugged into an actual drive or not because I've never tried updating software like that.
Good luck and let me know if it works

It didn't work...
i guess that ps3 is dead untill some almighty Custom Firmware
or some awesome tool comes out.
Now i can't even go back to the normal xmb it will just ask for update or else it will just shut down after sometime without showing anything...
Only Recover Menu shows up but when you try option 3 or 5 it tells me that it can't use hdd pffffffff. other options fails...
and as for firmware update you know the story it still doesn't want to update....grrrr
I'll keep that shit in a box and will open it maybe for xmas who knows ahaha
if some tight stuff pops up !
