Hey guys, first post here, hope I don't sound too much like a noob. well here goes: I am trying to update a game of mine on my ps3 which has no internet connection. I did all the research to find and download the update, and am now trying to install it via thumb drive. my problem is that the update does not show up on the ps3, as i can only view the thumb drive in the video, music, and photo sections. it just doesnt show up. if there was some sort of regular file browser i think i could do it but right now i'm at a loss. any ideas?

you went to "install package files" under the game category and it didnt show up?
try a new thumb drive.
be sure the package file is on the root of the thumb drive
be sure it was indeed a package file and not a virus for your pc :P
format the thumb drive to fat32
try multiple thumb drives
also when you manually install an update, be sure it is compatible with 3.55
and if your on 3.56+, afaik there is not a way to install an update manually, but i could be wrong.

As No0b said above, if your PS3 is on firmware 3.56 or higher, you can only install updates over the internet. If you're on 3.55 or lower, then you can update to a CFW and install them via the Install Package Files option.
If you have a smartphone with a data plan, you can look into tethering your PS3 to it via wifi and that will allow you to get the update over 3G. Just be careful not to exceed your plan limit as some updates can be quite large.
