Send it to SONY. Sadly it seems like the flash chip has a bad block in a critical place.
Does anyone know if there is a website, or list, somewhere where all previously released versions of the firmware are available for download? I'm sure someone out there has it, and I always thought that I should keep the previous ones just in case, but never knew how practical that would be.
Here you go, complete with MD5 hashs to make sure it is right file, and all three regions, even has the two versions of the Sony v3.41 release:

This list was complied by ModRobert, a very valuable long-time scene webhost himself!
Hello all,
Maybe someone can help me out a little more...
So I have a 40G PS3 that is in an endless loop when updating, and it gives me the 8002F147 error on 33-35% install of the update. Can someone tell me what can be wrong?
I have read this entire post but not sure if this is a hardware issue.
So far I have done the following things:
To get out of the loop and make PS3 format on it's own the HDD I put it on my Windows XP laptop and initialize it with Disk Management, assign a letter to the drive, and format it with fat32formater.
Inserting the HDD into the PS3 results in breaking the loop and being able to access the Recovery Menu.
I let PS3 to format the drive, and install 3.01 update from another HDD or USB flash (checked the MD5 sum of the file and it is correct).
Strange sting is the following.... from 0% to around 20% there is no activity either on the USB flash nor the HDD (mounted in PS3), starting from 20 it somehow copies information to the HDD, short after I get the error it stops to write on the HDD, then a short blink on the LED and the error comes up.
I have tried with 3 different HDD and with all it does the same thing.
Any ideas?
I have done some more experiments so this is the update:
Took out the Blu-Ray off the PS3 and now it stops at 42%. So there is something wrong in this area and the error is now 8002F14E instead of 8002F147 like before.
I will test more... but any idea that will make me advance quickly is welcomed.
Most likely it is trying to hash-check your blu-ray firmware (make sure it is not modded!)
It is best to double-check the flat cable going between the motherboard and drive, make sure all the little silver pins are nice and shiny and the connections tight.
Best to replace it possible from another ps3 (cable only), not the drive has that will make it worse.
Also, try right after pressing the power button, to quickly press and hold the eject button for more then 12 seconds, that should reset the blu-ray drive flags stored in the battery-backed ram.
Final step, open up system, and remove that ****ing cmos battery, and wait 30 minutes (and then try again) (you need on the PS3 to wait a long time, the ram takes for some a while to decay and totally forgot, unlike a cmos on a pc motherboard, which is only 2 to 3 minutes).
Thanks for the info!
I'm already done the part with exchanging the cable from another PS3 and the result is the same. Also took very special attention on all the cables to the blu-ray and into the blu-ray.
I will try the 12 seconds trick and maybe one more time to take out the battery and hold it for a long time out (can I also try to run the PS3 without a battery?)
How can I find out where exactly in the blu-ray is the issue? Because I can only change the board from the blu-ray or the lens. It is more likely that the board is bad, or?
Anyway .... I find very strange the fact that with the blu-ray unit it gives me the error much quickly than without it....
How do I know if I got the blu-ray reseted? I holded for more than 12 seconds but nothing happens.
I have also 2 situations: 1- i press the power button and after that I hold the eject button, but it will beep 3 times ... or.. 2 - I press the power button and after that quick enought to not have the 3 beeps. Anyway the install starts soon before 12 seconds....
Ok, just for shlts and giggles, I decided to call Sony and ask about my bricked PS3 that was caused by 3.0 update that was "forced" upon me so that I could get back online. This fast talking little gum-chewing 18 year old girl skirted my original question to the point of stupidity, "If I was basically forced to update, and that update killed my system, I still have to pay you to have it fixed?!?". She said that millions of happy PS3 owners have updated and THEY have no problems. I said, hey sweety, have you looked online line lately and seen the thousands of systems that have already been bricked because of your stupid forced updates? She said...and I quote, "Sir, it is absolutely unfounded that any update has ever caused a system malfunction."If I could have reached through the phone and back-handed her, I'd be in jail right now. Nice work Sony you bunch monkeys, I wonder how your multiple law suits are going? EPIC FAIL numb-nuts!!
