In the same situation mate, tried the psgrade, stuck at red screen now... I'm going to keep trying there just has to be a way to get past this, I thought that the factory/service mode would be the answer and maybe it is but we have to find it first
lol, my friedn unbriked his fat ps3 too, good he didn't sell it
now that due to downgrading everyone has a service jig on his own I thought it might be interesting to remind of the manual leaked in september.

If you have updates stopping at certain points, it's normally a hardware failure. Figuring out what it is updating at the time will tell you the problem part.
Edit: It could even be a loose connector is all that it is.
Right, my adventures of re-marrying have failed. Using a Maximus 32 PIC to kick into service mode, I've done the following:
3.50 > 3.41 modded > 2.10 > 3.41 (normal, upgraded in XMB) > 2.10 > 3.41 modded.
Hoping that it's a payload thing and the E3 downgraded will do it.
Well, no joy for me getting this Ps3 brick back to life.
It powers on, no screen, then goes into standby after a short bit. No recovery mode?
When I powered it on the first time, it asked for me to plug a controller in to the USB port, but then shut off.
Anybody have any ideas on this one? Everything looks "normal" inside, I haven't reset the battery yet. The original owner says it was failing on updates, and I'm trying to find out what firmware4 it was on, and what firmware he attempted to update to.
The BD drive ribbon cable was loose from both motherboard and drive, but I hooked those back up (I hate those damn connectors, we go back a ways to my embedded systems work, ugh) with no other result than power on, nothing on screen, then standby after 20~30 seconds. When the drive is in, it does flash briefly to access it.
Also, I tried swapping the hard drive with an 80GB drive I had laying around.
Had to give up for the day, as my youngest just got home from school (don't want him to know I'm working on a second PS3)
So all in all, if we have a broken bluray drive and can not afford a new or used one then we are screwed, right? I did a update when 3.41 came out and got the install loop and have been outta luck since.
Yeah, if you're sure it's your blu-ray anyway. I had the same issue until I put in a new drive.
Not sure if service mode upgrade would work. But you won't be able to do anything with no/an unmatched drive.
Anybody have any ideas on my issue? I don't have time to open it back up and get to the battery (WTF did they engineer it that way?!??), but will try that tomorrow.
I'd do a search, but how exactly do you search for "turns on then goes into standby within a few seconds"? it's too generic to search on. My Google-fu is normally pretty good, but fails completely in this case.
It is, however, a brick. As this is a thread on unbricking, I'd like to add this to the scenarios and hopefully find a solution (I'm pretty sure it's going to involve the service jig).
The original owner only said of the firmware "it was before 3.5". I can't seem to get to recovery mode, either... I never get the two consecutive beeps (just another single beep).
Anybody heard of this situation?
It's a fat 40 CECHC01. Took me forever to find a decent disassembly guide that matched this system.
