This has baffled us both. He thought his ps3 had died. no picture on TV or sound connection on HDMI and couldnt seem to get it to reset to even work on Composite.
So he brought it here. Plugged it in via HDMI. worked fine
Any way after a lot more back and fore we established that the PS3 will work here fine here but only using certain HDMI cables. seems not to like cheap ones
But will not work on his TV using ANY of the cables.
Last thing, tried my PS3 on his TV and that works fine as well.
So.. somethings up with his PS3 surelly? and is it fixable do you think?
Its on 3.55 so he obviously would rather try to fix it rather than risk a new one.

His TV probably doesn't support HDCP:
Code:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-bandwidth_Digital_Content_Protection
I believe, cos of Blu-ray, that the PS3 requires it over HDMI.

I dont think HDCP is to blame. His PS3 has been working as expected for a good while now. The only thing thats altered is hes changed his surround receiver from a Panasonic to a Denon. Also like i said my PS3 works fine on his TV setup.
To me it seems somethings broke hardwre wise on his ps3...

For some reason with PS3s it configures its video output to the tv it has been on, so when you want to connect it to a new tv you have to reset the console with a full power cycle. What your friend needs to do is hold onto the power button for like 10 seconds or so. So that it can turn off, and then turn it self back on. There might be a beep, but I'm pretty sure thats just for when you want the recovery screen. So yeah, just hold down on the power button and give it a full cycle. Turn it back on and you should be good to go.

yeah what Gposh said....I know this from when I move my PS3 back and forth from my bedroom....just hold the power button down when turning on the ps3 and wait for one beep and let it go...then you will have to press the ps button on the controller and select use hdmi and it will setup the tv signal

just to update this. been trying the ps3 on quite a few different tv's now lol been carrying it round all over.
anyway seems it works fine on most TV's... But refuses to display a picture on any Panasonics (which of course is what his tv is)
Also it works fine on any tv connected via AV composite, it detects a usable hdmi output but black screen when you enable it
Is it likely that whatever controls HDCP has broke? Im starting to think he plugged the hdmi in while it was powered on and maybe thats screwed something.

Don't know if it'll help, but I just switched from a Sharp to a Panasonic TV and had picture corruption (white dots all over the screen). Did some googling, with most people saying it was the HDMI cable, switched that with a new one, same problem.
Anyway I tried turning "Deep Color/Colour Output" in the display options to OFF and now it works perfectly.
Doubt it'll help, but you never know.

Well this seems to be happening way to frequently to people now. My solution with my slim was to unplug my LG's and samsung for about half an hour, this seemed to re-set the handshake. I'm calling cheapo system myself, I say this because i spent way too long on this same problem when the most obvious worked.
