I got a phat PS3 here which I bought for £30!! So cheap because the Blu-ray drive is faulty. Its on 2.20 firmware I think.

Today is the day I wanna get into jailbreaking etc... I used to be a pro with ps2 but I haven't kept upto date!!
wii and 360 were the last consoles I hacked.

I'm new to PS3 jailbreaking so what ways can I hack my PS3?

Update your console to OFW 3.55: 3.55 | PS3-Hacks :: Hack your PlayStation 3

Then update to this (from recovery mode!) : kmeaw's 3.55 CFW Patched PUP | PS3-Hacks :: Hack your PlayStation 3

Then download the latest Multiman: From here

Place the FW files on a USB key @ USB:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP (one at a time, or just rename the one you're not using) and install 3.55 OFW.

When installing Kmeaw's FW, (from standby mode) hold the power button until it turns on, then back off. Let go, then hold again until you hear 2 quick beeps (there's one, then 2 quickly after), then let go of power and insert controller connected by USB cable. Select System Update.

No jailbreak dongle required!

Your Blu-Ray drive might not be too bad, might just be the laser, which you don't have to replace in order to play games, but if you do, loads more will work. If it's the logic board attached to the drive that's damaged/dead you'll need to order an exact replacement from Ebay and get a dongle to re-marry the board to your PS3, you'll know it's the logic board if your console gets stuck in an update loop around 40%.

I think the lasers just gone. Everything else on the drive seems to function well. Why would you need the logic board on the drive to work if your not using the drive to copy the game from?? Is it because your tricking the PS3 by making it think the games in the drive when it's not? So even if you use FTP server to transfer a game, your still need the logic board on the drive to work?

Is it because your tricking the PS3 by making it think the games in the drive when your not? - Exactly, some work without a laser, but they all (as well as any application or PSN game) need a working logic board, that's married to that console..

What do you mean a dongle to re-marry? Do you mean change the dongle to factory service mode? - Yes, you also need to get the relevant files on a fat32 USB dongle, but it's only if your logic board is damaged, so you more than likely don't have to worry about it (Google it if you want..).
