Is there a limit to installed PSN content?
Is there a limit to installed PSN content? –
I wanted to know if anyone knew if there was a limit to the amount of PSN content installed on your PS3. The reason I'm asking is with all the Duplex releases, ReActPSN, etc There are hundreds of available titles. I know that the PS3 has a limited amount of memory (RAM) and i think it's possible to hit a max number. A few weeks ago I had a system failure when installing content and had to start over. I was at roughly 200 titles if you count the ReActPSN dynamic themes that I installed. At the time I was sorting the titles in categories called "PSN A", "PSN B", etc. I've been restoring my system after the failure and instead of sorting them out this way, I've hooked up a keyboard and just typed in the name of the game as the category name. I did this to sort the list alphabetically. I noticed that when doing this after a massive install of about 80 titles, that when I got down to the last 4 or 5 all in the unknown category, I changed one and the unknown category disappeared with 3 or 4 games still inside of it. I changed the category view to the unsorted list and the games are visible there. From there I continued on and corrected the categories the way I wanted and they showed up again when I switched back to category view. It made me wonder that even though I found and corrected the disappearing game categories, that by doing so it would cause other games to disappear. Does anyone have a clue about what's going on with this?
RAM have nothing to do with this. It's some bug in databases handling. IMO. ;]
you're probably right about it being a bug in the database handling. I'm not so sure about it having nothing to do with RAM because I'd imagine that the database has to be loaded into memory to be sorted during the addition/removal of item categories. It might not be a limitation of the amount of RAM, but a limitation in the amount of bytes reserved for the count. What I mean is if it only has one location reserved for this info meaning the max is "FF" or 255 then anything past 255 would be lost. I've added another 40 or so since the disappearing unknown category and haven't seen it again and the list appears to be growing instead of old items being replaced by new items. I might have to do a manual count of all the NPUB*, NPEB*, etc folders in my game directory and compare it to the number of items listed in the XMB to make sure. I don't think Sony planned on release groups and ReActPSN making so many PSN titles freely available. Hopefully it was just a glitch and nobody else runs across it. Thanks for the response
