I have a CECHH01 (40gb) that went YLOD on me, after attempting a bunch of "attempted" fixes, I no longer get the yellow light but, it still goes from green to a blinking red and I can not do anything with it any more (bricked?). It's time to fix, replace or send out to Sony (they said they would take it after the case was opened). I just can't take it any more.

I was talking to someone over at my local pawn shop asking about used PS3 systems, and he told me he had a few broken ones, one does not play discs any more, it's also the same model as mine (CECHH01). He said pretty cheap but, before I go over there, Will a swap from the same model work ?

I've googled the hell out of this. My PS3 does not have the drive's board mounted to the bottom of blu-ray drive, the whole drive is in a silver case with a about 2" ribbon cable and 4 pin power connector.

Some places say it's married to the mother board via keys, others say that it's just the drive board to the drive. There is another who said as long as the system is the same, it "should" work but, I can't find a clear answer here on this.

I'm figuring good system with bad blu-ray drive, I swap my blu-ray drive in the good system and I have a complete system. If it's under $100 (sony repair cost), then it should be good.

Can anyone confirm 100% that this will work before I go out and spend $$ on a used system that is semi-working ?

    Thanks !!!!

The daughterboard is paired with the motherboard. You can swap all the other parts.

If those pawn shop PS3 had their drives swapped and now dont match you might as well write them off. If the drives are original and just have a bad laser or motor there is a good chance you could use some parts from yours to revive them (assuming you keep the original daughterboard)

What I asking is, there is no daughterboard on my Blu-ray drive like the older ones, so are you saying a direct swap won't work unless I pull the drive all apart to pulll out the board ?

    Daughterboard @ 3:11

It is located underneath the silver protective shield. If you dont have the original daughterboard your pretty much screwed.

Thanks, that does clear it up. So, it might be possable to do a swap but, I have to pull it apart.

Is it a easy swap (to swap board), meaning is it just a ribbon cable or 2 or do I have mess with the drive itself ?

Just would like to avoid messing with the moving parts of the drive if possable.

dunno if this helps but I think I just did what you're talking about. Bad BR in a 40 so I swapped the entire drive from a 60 with no luck. The Drive is married but the lens is not. Replaced lens in the 40 with the one from the 60 - meaning I took the lens out of the 60 gig drive and put it into the 40 gig drive and wet my pants when GT5 loaded on the console. In case you're wondering, I had a 60 gig brick laying around due to a certain 3.55 firmware modification XD

Yes it is fairly easy. Once you get off that metal cover its a couple of screws and ribbons.

Yes he could do that, but its much easier to swap out boards then it is lasers.

Cool and thanks, that clears it up, as long as it's a sealed device with a failed drive I should be ok.

    Thanks again !

I know this was back in January, but I am new to the issues of the "FAT" PS3. I have a question about "Reballing" the BMD-002 A4 for my CECHG01. Can I use a BMD-001 A3 (working daughterboard) and just solder the "Key" from my BMD-002 A4? I also have a CECHE01 that breaks the power source to the Blu-Ray Drive at the motherboard (black wire has no power). Is there a way to get that reconnected? I can probably assume that messing with the motherboard is a task not worth the effort since I never see any "how-to" videos on that subject. I got lucky and was able to repair (2) CECHG01 systems and got in over my head when I took on these last (2) systems. I feel the "Reball" should be easier to do than the CECHE01 motherboard. All I need to know now is if I can swap the keys between the two different daughterboards. Thanks in advance.

There is no marrying for the lens, only the controller board. You probably had a dead lens.

Pretty sure this won't work, you'd want to get the same daughterboard to reball the chip on. However f you're on firmware 3.55 or lower, you can simply remarry a new controller board to it, and it might work with a different board (altho I can't say for sure). Look it up here : Bluray Drive - PS3 Development Wiki

Also, have you tried using a different power supply on your CECHE?
