Hi guys basically I have a SLIM PS3 connected to a 3d HDtv via HDMI and a surround sound system connected to the ps3 via Optical digital cable.
When playing a game there is sound but when the game cuts to a cut scene I can not hear a word that is being said, also when I am watching a film (DVD, movie) I can not hear what is going on in the middle of the screen it's hard to explain it's sort of muffled but what little sound effects do come out of the rear speakers are clear.
there is nothing wrong with the surround system all speakers work fine.
I can't watch blue ray films etc when people come round with surround sound as the system is just dvd.
Thanks for your help in advance guys

connect the ps3 to the surround with hdmi if possible and then then the optical from the surround sound to the tv. My amp had the same issue where the hdmi wasn't able to put out sound. So i hooked up my ps3 to amp through hdmi. then optical cable from amp to tv. all works great now. Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice mate, but you can only get true 5.1 surround sound through the optical cable which would have to come straight from the ps3, if you go from ps3 to t.v then to surround sound system it may give sound through all the speaker but it won't be true surround sound,
I watched Blade years ago on a demo surround ound system and he throws a blade that's kills vampires all around him and the sound did the same on the system it sounded amazing to say the least I want this quality in my front room ha.

could be the amp I will put a dvd on through just the amp alone and check that the sound travels through all speakers, I read somewere though that you can only have true surround sound through optical digital cable. so if something happens on the top left of the screen just your sub and rear left speaker works? if so that's good to go I will set mine the same.
I would still like to know though why I can't just connect the optical straight to the amp and have surround sound??????
Thanks for the reply

I've been using this set up for a looooong time. a tos link to my receiver and hdmi to my tv. I suggest you run the sound configuration wizard again on your PS3, set optical as primary and let it detect all that your receiver can decode. If you still want audio on your tv, set multiple audio out [ON]. Make sure your av is set to auto detect or direct stream, depending on what you have.
BTW... I've updated my AV Reciever and stopped using the optical cable, everything is working through hdmi.
