I want to convert MKV files so that I can play backed up MKV files from my NAS drive onto my PS3.
Does anyone have good advice for that?I'm really appreciate.

Yes, MKV2VOB is the greatest. Takes just seconds to convert h264 MKV without re-encoding.

For the media server, I use Tversity. You can also use PS3 Media Server. Some people prefer that for its simplicity.

what settings do you use in the configuration for best quality and sound ?

If it's using one of the fast methods (mkv2vob, for instance) then it's just repaking the data streams, not reencoding, so it shouldn't make any difference in quality.

Me, I'm hoping that sooner or later we get to the stage where the ps3 has mplayer or soem other thing and can play this stuff natively.

You want both. MKV2VOB converts the file to an MPG that is natively compatible to the PS3. It does not lose any quality whatsoever because it does not transcode. The PS3 *is* capable of playing the h264, but it just does not recognize the mkv container. This program fixes that problem.

With the file converted to a natively supported format, then your media server of choice can simply stream the file, also without transcoding on the fly. This is what you want.

I had to use tsMuxeR and MKV2VOB for the exact same situation as yours. Basically use tsMuxeR to ensure the video stream profile is 4.1 or less and then use MKV2VOB to get rid of the DTS-Audio and convert it into an MPG.

The Ps3 does not have a file size limit for internal harddrive.

Here's my experience with streaming to PS3:
MPEG2 files have no size limit. Audio should be AC3 or LPCM.
M2TS files have no size limit. You can stream anything that's MPG2 or AVC. VC1 doesn't work. Audio: AC3 and LPCM works. TrueHD,DTS doesn't work.

I suggest you convert MKV files to MPEG.
How to convert MKV DTS to play on PS3?

DTS (standard, not HD Master) can work when you convert with MKV2VOB. The guy figured out a trick to "hide" the DTS as PCM, but when you stream the file to your DTS receiver, it comes out as DTS!
