sony's silent update

I wonder if this is what I've just seen. Been using custom firmware to mess around with the network and the machine suddenly started downloading a LOT of data from one of the Sony servers. My logfiles reached about 130 MB before I killed it.

Yup, it seems to have been downloading a bunch of images and other stuff for news, "what's new" and the like, no silent update, nothing sinister.

I think it's worth pointing out that the "DNS trick" reroutes your DNS to a server set up by Aaron Lindsay, who - as far as I can tell - is a well-established homebrew developer. He has a Twitter feed, a blog and so on. More here:

Pretty much. Though, according to Mathieulh, Sony implemented RCE (remote code execution) in the newest firmware. This means that if they find you online on 3.5_6 CFW, then they could essentially push down a 3.5_6 OFW update on you without your permission or even go as far as formatting your HDD (both highly unlikely, but the possibility is there). So, I wouldn't touch anything 3.5_6 until all those new "features" are completely removed.

Sonny cannot force and update or format your HD without your permission or they will get a big law suit, imagine you loose all your games and saves that you've done over 5 year period and it all got wipe out. This is just paranoid, no body can force you to update anything without your permission. Do you see any softwares out there do update forcefully? I don't think so, not apple, not microsoft, not java, NO BODY.
