Sony says PS3 programmed to shut off after exactly 4 years? WTF

A friend of mine has a 4 year old fat and his system wont boot anymore. He called Sony and they told him that its because the ps3 is programmed to shut off for routine maintenance after 4 years and the only way to fix it is to send it in to them to have it serviced for $120.00. WTF? I have a five year old fat that has never shut down but its still on 3.55. Anyone else hear this ridiculas claim from sony?

Might have been a tech guy ****ing with you. When my roommate was blanking out my hard drive daily to get me to think that my PS3s hard drive was ****ed so I would sell my PS3 to him cheap (I have a 20 gig BC model), I called sony and the guy said it was because the PS3 wasn't hooked up to a Sony brand TV.

I would get the name(s) of the tech support guy(s) and report him, because what he/she says about the PS3 shutting off after 4 years is bullshit. People spreading false info like this shouldnt be working on customer service.

i did it with a samsung tech guy
i rung their service center up which was local to me as my galaxy S2 was getting burn in
he said have you dropped it ?? i said no why
he said if u drop them it causes burn in and it wont be covered under warranty
i LOL'd at him he said is somethgin funny
i said yeah ive not even dropped the fookin fone in with you and your trying to get out of warranty work
i put him straight about the dropping and the burn in shyte lol
told him to stop reading the piece of technical paperwork with questions and answers they give them lol

No no...there was a misunderstanding;because Ps3 will cause a auto detonation after 4 years,not shutting down....
