I was browsing around looking for a list of licensed products when I stumbled upon this:

    PlayStation Knowledge Center | Support - PlayStation.com

The legal department of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has determined that "mod chips" are illegal under contributory copyright infringement. SCEA does not have any information on "mod chips" or emulators and would NOT recommend installing one on your PlayStation® product.

If you install a "mod chip" on your PlayStation® product:

    * You will VOID the Sony Limited Warranty
    * Your system will no longer be considered a Sony product
    * Your system will be ineligible for service as SCEA will not repair any modified systems
This is what sticks out to me here. It seems to me that if I modify my system, by declaring that the product isn't theirs anymore they give up all legal rights to it. Am I off the mark? Any thoughts?

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I wondered if this could have any ramifications in the Geohot case.

Sony products aren't Sony products anyhow.

Once you get one then features get taken away by Sony. If you touch it in any way then it's no longer their problem. That's what they think! They don't consider it a Sony product anyhow by the way they conduct themselves.

It's like it's somebody else problem once you get it. They just don't have much support.

i believe what they mean is that they will "disavow" your playstation if you mod it so they are 100% not at fault for any infringement facilitated by a modded playstation.

That's something that should be brought up in court….by modding your system, its no longer a Sony product….its on their site…they said it…If $ony don't want to claim a modded PlayStation anymore, then its their loss…however, there are some people that bought the PlayStation just because it can be modded…like I did with PS2, PS3 and PSP….(PS1 was out before alot of people even knew what modding was)

Its just another 'scare tactic', as they are only saying what we all already know.

"If you mod it and break something, too bad for you, not our problem" is basically what they are saying with that.

Since they have made in more public than the 'scene' has, they had to say something to all those now "will be noobies" that will try to install some CFW and wind up bricking their consoles. You know Sony monitors sites like ours and is well aware of the brickings that took place and that people actually call them for help in fixing them.
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

^^ And that Sony does actually fix them.. Woulda thought they'd realise how it happened and return it un-repaired, instead we know they atleast have a way of repairing them and I'm not sure they gut them and read / write the NANDs on every one, more than likely another self file to use with their USB jig, I assume.

But that's very interesting about not being their product anymore, even though mod-chips aren't needed anymore..
oralphie: Will this allow chuck norris to play backups??? PLZ HELP!!!
