I have been trying to restore on my PS3 for the past 2 weeks.
I have a 750 Gb drive (internal) and 1 Tb (External/Fat32). I am Running CFW 3.55 True Blue v2.5
I will start from the beginning.
I just got my PS3 reflowed and got it working perfectly. I wanted to do a clean up on the drive. I knew I was missing about 100 Gb of data. Sometimes when I deleted file/data with multiman it did not change the drive space (I now know the cause).
So I did a Backup via the Backup Utility and then went into Safe mode and chose option 3, Restore File System. Unfortunately it seems that any drive past 320 Gb will receive an error saying that the Hard drive is corrupt and must be Formatted (I didn't find out about the 320 Gb max. until way after this happened).
So like a fool I formatted it and thought I will just restore it.
The backup was pretty massive 528 Gb. I figured I would just do a restore and that would be that.
The first time I got to 85% and it did not move for about 10 hours so I stopped it. As I got further and further into it it would just slow down massively.
I gave it another go. This time it got to 97% and didn't move for 25 hours, then it hit 98% and there was no activity for 20 hours (Again, as it progressed, it got slower and slower). This was going in to the 3 1/2 day mark. I called $ONY and they said it should only take a few hours. I explained that the Backup took 21 hours to do. they insisted that It should not take more than a day to restore it and my hard drive might be causing the issue. They said to do a long format or send it in for service. Yeah, my ass. (It would take 44 hours with the 750 Gb, I checked prior to doing the backup).
I stopped the restore again, plugged my drive into my PC and did a surface test and a few others to make sure the drive was not bad. It was in working order. I even Deleted and Created a new partition and gave it proper format.
I did do a restore of a backup from last year in march that was 27 Gb and it worked fine.
So now this is my 3rd attempt at the restore and I am at the 98% mark and have been keeping a log of the time, percentage, and remaining time.
I am 20 hours past when it hit 98% and I am officially into Day 4.
For the past 2 weeks I have done nothing but read in forums and see how long it has taken other to do this type of back up. I saw that a few people did 1 Tb restore and it took them around 10-12 days.
I also saw many people were plagued with it stopping at47%, 60% but the majority was 99% or 100% with a 800##### number error and it completely ruining there restore.
I did a lot of research and much of it was data in the Game Data Utility related. Some Blamed Uncharted 2 others GTA 4 and a few games that I don't have. Luckily, the people that were comparing notes found out that the only Uncharted 2 problem occurred when it was updated to 1.07 (I don't know how reliable that info was). The only save I saw that I had in common was Uncharted 2. Some games that are copy protected can mess up the restore process.
A lot of the Restore Fails were from '09-'10 and I did see a rapid decline after that when searching Google and the forums. I don't know if the newer firmware helped out or what, but I am glad I am on 3.55 and not 2.**.
I did find a work around though if this error code should happen (and it is not just one error code, depending on your ps3 model it can vary).
A fellow posted to hit the circle button when it hit 98% if it would error out at 99% or 99% if it errors out at 100% and the PS3 would rebuild the database files and everything would work. You would just have to look in you Game Data Utility for corrupted files and delete them (My problem is 2-3% of 528 Gb is 10-16 Gb.)
To my surprise every one in the forum had success with this except one person. I was like 8/1 recovery rate on that work around.
I had a theory. What I wanted to know is about the archive.dat files.
Here is how mine is setup in my PS3/EXPORT/BACKUP/############
archive.dat I have archive_00.dat-archive_45.dat
right around 180 gb,
archive2.dat I have archive2_00.dat-archive2_87.dat
right around 350 gb
If my recovery fails, I wanted to know if I just replaced the archive2.dat and archive 2_00-archive2_**.dat with a much smaller restore, right around 3 gigs would it work? And restore the first part and save everything I could to an external drive and then do the same thing for the archive.dat and archive_00.dat-archive_**.dat.
Or is the data encrypted with the date of the restore? It would just shorten the restore to around a day and I would be able to see what in in those 2 archived file set's and remove any troubling files.
I can't find anywhere on the net that tells what is in archive.dat or archive2.dat restore files.
Not even $ONY knows the particulars of the archive.dat files and what each one does.
(I hope this makes sense, I tried to explain it the best I could)
I believe that the first archive_00.dat files are the PS1/PS2/PS3 game saves along with any psp backed up data. Which would make sense on how many saves I have. The Archive2_00.dat files maybe actual games backed up in the GAMES and game Directory on the hd0 and the Game Data Utility. Which would make sense due to the amount of games and data I have backed up in those folder. But I am not 100%. Both archives might be crucial to the restore process.
So if any one can shine some light on that I would be much obliged.
If my restore does in fact fails, my theory is that I can just restore the first 180 Gb by replacing the archive2.dat files and back up everything I can, then replace the archive.dat files and the Restore the 350 Gb and trim it down and try another backup with a lot less data. Meanwhile I will keep the files I move and not alter them in anyway. It will just be shortening the restore immensely.
I know I should have removed all the Game Data before hand now. But there is no going back.
If any one can please offer up any tips, words of wisdom or encouragement I would be most thankful.
It's been a painstaking 2 weeks.
So I am just keeping my fingers crossed at this point and hope fortune smiles upon me.
Thank you in advance, I could really use some advice.
Here is a posting of 'Restore Log' I have been keeping. I hope it may help some one out in the future.
