Is it possible to use the bluray drive from my 120gb Slim on my 40gb phat? Before you ask me why I would want to do that, it's because my Slim is pretty much bricked due to Sony's 3.56 firmware bug, where you can't upgrade your HDD (My original HDD was formatted for PC use and I had no idea such a bug existed on the PS3's firmware at the time). On my phat model, everything works fine but the lens inside its bluray drive is dead. I was thinking about getting a new KES-400A lens for it at first, but I currently can't afford one at this time.

So then, everything leads me to this question: Can I just swap the disc drive in my phat model for the working one in my Slim? I know I'll need to swap the circuit board on the drives as well (According to a youtube video I saw), but no one has been able to answer me if this will actually work though when using the Slim's bluray drive on a phat.

Pretty sure it won't work, you need to use the same drive to swap them and yes you do need to keep the original logic board off your drive.

I'd just focus on getting your slim fixed.. Have you tried 3.56 v2? It's meant to fix the bug, but I haven't updated any of mine to 3.56 myself so can't say.. Besides, most games work without a laser at this stage, if you want any that don't work discless, use your original disk in your slim.

You can get a replacement laser, but they're un-predictable for how long they'll last (since most of them on Ebay are refurbs). I'd look for a YLOD 40GB and just take the drive from that, since it's an original laser it should last longer and it'll only cost you like €50 if ya hunt around, very easy to swap them too.

What do you mean by the same drive? Do you mean like the same drive model or something?

I just mostly want a working disc drive so that I can still play my original disc games since they aren't discless compatible, and maybe play a few other games that aren't discless compatible as well.

As for trying to fix the Slim, since 3.56v1 was the last firmware installed on it and my original HDD was already formatted, it's pretty much too late to do anything about it. When I tried downloading v2, it just gives me the same error as with v1 where it says the data is corrupted. Only other choice I have with it is to send it in to Sony, but I don't have the $150 for it since it's out of warranty.

As for getting a YLOD PS3, that would cost me as much as just buying the lens or the bluray drive itself, which I already said that I can't buy at this time. I did search ebay for a replacement drive or a YLOD PS3 a couple weeks ago but the only ones I can find are the ones where either the drives don't work anymore or that the lens don't work/are missing.
