My PS3 doesn't have a BD-ROM, it only has a broken motherboard of the BD-ROM, that probably won't work.
Can I simply buy this thing and replace the whole BD-ROM drive?
Blu Ray Drive KEM-400aaa CECHA01 60gb For PS3 PS 3 USA - eBay (item 350392305080 end time Jan-06-11 09:06:34 PST)
I have a 60GB PAL PS3.
Some people have reported replacing BD boards, and the ps3 recognizing it.
but your going to need a matching board, i dont know how that works.
google will give you all the information you need.
in most cases, your going to only be able to replace the drive, and put your exsitsting board on it.
Sadly the board went up in smoke, but for some reasons my PS3 does recognize it, but don't think it will work fully, currently the board things that I have a disc inside :D
I have reinstalled many SONY VAIO notebooks and they had also BD-ROMs, every time I installed updates it asked me about BD-ROM firmware, maybe if the board is taken from 3.41 it could work. But still, no proof.
I did search google about this problem, couldn't really understand what exactly is this "controller board" and the posts were quite old, so I asked here to make sure.
You need your logic board, there married to the PS3. You only option is to fix your board or change over the flash rom chips. The rom is a BGA chip so its not a simple job.
There is plenty of info on this situation on the forum.
