Reball vs reflow ? Results?
Reball vs reflow ? Results? –
So I have found a guy that does a reflow repair for $45 and does reballing for $55. He seems to know his stuff and has a decent rep where I'm from. He is suggesting to just do a reflow and I am wondering if he is just suggesting that cuz it's easier for him to do.
Anyone that's had a pro reball fix done please reply with how long yours lasted after reballing?
Also anyone with good pro reflow done, what are your results?
Should I have this guy reball it you think. Opinions, suggestions, etc please
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.
a reflow will just repair it temporarily, trust me. that old ass solder that has been heated and cooled so many times... it has already started cracking, why would you want to just reflow that old ass solder?
i personally have 1 guy i use for pro reball services, he charges 100 bucks (but i get a discount :P) and he guarantees it for one year. but it will be as good as new.
another thing, dont let people tell you leaded solder is better. leaded solder has a lower melting point, which you DO NOT want when it comes to the rsx and the ps3, cause it gets pretty hot with them graphically intense games.
go with a reputable reball service. find "ps3specialist" on ebay. i talk to him everyday as we do alot of other buisness together, and he is REALLY good at reball. and he discourages a reflow because no matter how good a job they do at it, it is still temporary because of that old ass solder that has been heated up and cooled so many times it has started cracking and getting bad joints.
look at it this way. the more times you heat metal up and cool it down... the weaker it gets. it makes it brittle and malformed.
a reball will put fresh GOOD solder in the joints, and 99% of the time its the RSX needing reball. i dont think ive ever even heard of a CELL needing reballed.
anyways, you better go with a reball service and have a recognized person do it.
I would be VERY skeptical of someone who said they could reball for $10 more. It is 10 times more work than a reflow. After lifting the chip, cleaning the contacts and preparing for stencilling new balls is a tedious miserable job!
Also, you DEFINITELY want leaded balls, they are not as brittle and prone to cracks. Yes they have a lower melting point but your GPU's never going to reach 180C! LOL!!
DONT GO WITH ANYONE WHO USES LEADED SOLDER. IT HAS A LOT LOWER OF A MELTING TEMP. read it for yourself.
Solder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
alot of technicians say its better just because it is easier for them to use and has a significant lower melting point
Lordy, lordy, what in the world is motivating you to say such nonsense?
How is a machine that ramps the fan at 80C and shuts off at 100C supposed to reach the MELTING point of lead solder?
Meanwhile LEAD-FREE solder starts growing microscopic cracks from heat stress anywhere over 65C on these consoles.
This is why both Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles have a short lifespan.
If you have lead free solder balls, better modify your fanspeed if you want it to last.
PS3 fan booster mod chips available now!!
im not here to argue. i base my facts on actual personal experience.
