If Sony disabled consoles intentionally, the outrage would have drastic reverberations, not only in the US, but in the EU, Sony would likely trigger severe legal action.
It will never happen.
One thing that will, probably, happen, is cease and desist letters, followed by possible legal actions against people with jailbroken consoles. While most companies are smart enough to avoid it, Sony has shown a willingness...glee is more like it... at turning their lawyers loose on it's own customers. The general belief in these corporations is that right or wrong, the side with the biggest legal budget wins in court. This myth was perpetrated by the likes of the RIAA and MPAA, who have never recovered a fraction of a percent of their operating budgets in actual court cases, and done nothing to stop the ever increasing spread of illegal copies of media.
