Question about blu-ray replacement.
Question about blu-ray replacement. –

Hey all,
I've got an 80 gig ps3 (4 usb ports/bc) and the blu-ray is no longer reading disks. I've opened it up and found that my laser model is KES-400A. I found a website that will send me up a replacement lens (thegamersfix). However someone locally (I live in Montreal) said he could sell me a new "box" - rather than change the laser. He said as long as I could take off the controller board off the old blu-ray I could put it on the new one.
Since the prices come out to the same (about $80) which would you recommend? Will a new box just work if I transfer the controller board?
Any input would be appreciated.
thanks

I would replace just the laser unit and pay half the price. I recently completed a similar project and also purchased a deck + laser from thegamersfix. Total project cost was $47 US, and an easy fix, I had a minor issue getting the mechanics re-aligned, my issue wasn't the norm either, but it was worth it.
Additionally, if you have absolutely zero experience with working on consoles, there are plenty of tutorials here, found through google, and on youtube.

thanks a lot for your help. I'm going to end up ordering from them. Unfortunately because I live in Canada, shipping made the costs about the same - but I wasn't sure about just transferring a cicruit board and having the same functionality.
Thx again.
