PS3:
if you want to use a console for multi-media purposes (blue-ray, avi, mp4) and as a PC then getting a fat PS3 is your best bet. if you get a media player on linux then you can watch hd videos in mkv format. note: you cannot install an operating system (OS) to a slim PS3 and you can thank sony for that.
there are many variants for linux taylored specifically for the PS3. Gentoo linux is by far the most complicated one to install (you require some knowledge of linux & gentoo) even by using a walkthrough as you have to type in commands (like in dos). Xubuntu (http://psubuntu.com/wiki/InstallationInstructions) is really easy install given that you use a GUI bootloader (Kboot
aka "otheros.bld" so that you won't have to know like 20 specific commands to type.
sony was really simpathetic with the fact that you can actually upgrade your console's hdd (in terabytes too) very easily without the need for a hack as with homemade 360 hdds.
the infamous "double-wammy" hardware failure (ylod & dead blue-ray laser) can happen either simultaneously or consecutively after one or the other if it occurs. these failures are common to happen after 2 yrs of owning your console (seen it happen).
there is a fix for the ylod (yellow light of death) that can be done at home,
http://www.haxnetwork.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=265 and you'll need adobe to open the pdf file.
overall, the PS3 is an awesome console to have is so much more versatile in media usages than the 360 but it's still unhacked.
Xbox 360:
i wouldn't buy a 360 alone for halo ODST as that game completely blows (wtf happened bungie!). just grab a cheaper copy of halo 3 (for online play).
in multi-media, the 360 can play wmv/hd, mp4, and avi video format via a disc, usb stick, or an external hdd (formatted in FAT32). you can also stream the video formats mentioned above simply from your PC (given that your 360 is wireless or have a long LAN cable) or with windows media center. you won't have blue-ray or a linux media player to play your ripped hd videos.
anyways, i would get a 360 for the fact that it has way more games than the PS3. in contrast, you actually insert any 360 game into the drive and copy it over to the hdd and play it from there with better long-term benefits (prolonging the hardware) as to sony which only allowed you to install a third party OS onto the hardrive (with the now old-school fat consoles only).
the 360 has been hacked and is moddable to play back-ups "that you actually own" and is like 3 steps closer to seeing homebrew than the PS3.
yup, bootleg said it right that our post-modern consoles are complete junk when it comes to reliability. yet, the 360 is so much more fixable and can be done by noobs (given he finds the right info) and is a cheap fix-labor when taken to local electronic repair shops.
you'll get xbox live with tons of more players to play with on any online game vs with the PS network.
so, in reliability, both the PS3 and 360 suck! the PS3 is a better machine though and you can see it's potential with exclusive games only. i have both consoles and it's hard determining which is better. so, you'll have to personally weigh in multi-media vs a bigger game library.
