one of few games that are worth to play is resistance: fall of men, but this thing is running on 720p NOT 1080p or 1080i, and on the most older gen hdtv sets that do not support 720p, resistance will be shown at 480p resolution instead of 1080i resolution.

not a big deal, but certainly a disappointment for those without a newer hdtv set.

i cannot stop wondering why sony used 720p instead of 1080p that sony has kept on saying better than xbox360's 720p resolution. (of course, at least some xbox360 games are NOT running full 720p resolution, but like 695p instead) i thought ps3 was powerful enough to utilize even two sets of 1080p screens without any problem.

    hopefully, games get better soon

maybe they just didnt implement 1080i/p at all into the game?
Not all ps3 games avaible now do but it should have become standard by the time the second generation of games arrive

If the game wasnt programmed to be 1080x then it wont be, upscaling will be even worse.

720p should be spectacular... hell im enjoying the shit out of it in 480i.

The reason that "upscaling will be even worse" though, is because the PS3 does not have an upscaler. If it did, then it wouldn't be worse, and upscaling would be free, no slowdown or anything.

    Like the 360 does it.

i think there are two problems with upscaler on ps3.

1st. no hardware upscaler (just convert output signal to 1080i or even 1080p from 720p...you may call it pan & scan or whatever... if sony wants to brag about true high def on ps3, they should have included upscaler...advanced upscaler would have been even better)

2nd. inflexible underlying os or api to change resolution on fly 720p to 1080i would hurt frame rate much if at all

1st problem is lame because i think sony axed idea just to prevent users from playing ps/ps2 games in higher resolution even though some high def tv set would do it

2nd problem can be resolved easily, but overhead might hurt more than its benefit. since there are tons of space on bd rom disk, developers can create disks for both 1080i and whatever resolution they want to use

but that only makes wii more attractive....

since ps3 "is a computer" it should act like computer. pc games let you change resolutions not because it was programmed for that in mind (of course, they are), but the os is designed to scale in that manner. supercomputer power should be put in good use like flexible resolution scaling

Wondered about this and saw the specs of my HDTV:

    VirtualHD™ Video Processor
    - 3 HD Aspect Modes
    - 6 SD Aspect Modes
    - 1080i/720p/480p/480i Input Compatible

So I would be ok right?

with resistance when i try to run it at 1080i, it even states, its better quality to run at 720P. so which tells me, time for me to get a TRUE HD (1080P) LCD TV/projector.

so 720P gives better quality than 1080i. i rahter have better picture quality than resolution, but get a 1080P and have TRUE HD and the best of both.

Also i had to specify on my ps3 the resolutions that my TV had, i turned off AUTOMATIC detection and went with manual and set them up.

If Micorsoft can update the xbox360 dashboard via patch update to enable 1080p support then sony should beable to fix that issue with a firmwire update.
