I'm not sure how it exactly it happened, but my PS3 won't play any disks. I've tried PS3 games, PS2 games and DVDs. Nothing shows up.

I don't think I have a warranty on it since I bought it used.

What steps should I take to try and fix it?

Edit: When I bought it about a year ago it worked fined. I just turned it on recently and nothing shows when I put in a disk.

Welcome to dead laser land. Many of us have been there.
You probably need to order a new laser. I could go through the whole process with you, but I'm lazy. If you just google the problem you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to replace it once you buy a replacement off the internets.

Just make sure you buy the correct laser for your console.

Is that the only possibility? I thought I read somewhere that someone used compressed air to clean it out and it worked. I don't want to damage anything though.

And this is why I hate disks with a passion. When the hell will they switch over to using games off your hard drive. Disks always become a problem.

You can try to pull the whole thing apart and very gently swab the laser with 99% isopropyl. Might work. Dead lasers are very common though.

When you buy one, make sure it has some kind of warranty with it.

BTW... DVDs aren`t reading either? Is the clock spinning in the top right hand corner of the screen when you put a disc in?

More than likely a laser problem, but could also be the logic board too (less likely)
