Ok so I have been holding off updating the PS3 for a while since no games I was playing required any.

After downloading update 3.15 via wifi, the PS3 has the error code in the title, followed by a message that says something like, "the PS3 has encountered an error while updating, please restart and try again"

I restarted, it didn't fix it. I re-downloaded via wired connection, tried installing from USB drive, quick formatted HDD. Everything ends in the same error code.

I'm currently formatting via full format, which will take ~3 hours.
I'm guessing this will not fix the problem though.

I can find very little about this specific problem, and the only resolution I have seen is to send it to Sony.
I really don't want to do this as this is a launch console which is out of warranty, and I don't want to risk getting a gimped non-BC compatible PS3 back from them.

Is the firmware chip likely messed up? Can it be replaced with a working one if it is jacked.

BTW: I can play games offline fine, and those that don't require past FW 2.76 online. Blu-Ray discs play fine too except the BD-Live features.

I am actually trying to get the netflix BD disc to work for streaming. It requires BD -Live, which is what made me want to update at all.

Thanks for any insight into a fix.

If your machine is still working fine on the current firmware,
and you only get this error during the install of the newer firmware.

Then one of two things it could be.

Somehow when you are downloading the latest update via your PS3, it is getting mess-up or corrupted somehow, or aborting.

I would try using your PC and download the update and transfer it to a usb stick, and install it via the "recovery menu"

If you still get errors, then your internet is somehow messed up, go to a friends house and download the update from there.

If you still get errors, the last possible thing is there is TOO MUCH to update from v2.76 to v3.15, try a half-way update, download an older one like v2.80 or v3.0 and install it via the usb stick thru the "recovery menu", and then try the next update after that to bring it up to the current level.

    Thanks!

That is something I had not thought of. I don't see any option to download any other version than 3.15 on Sony's site. Is there another reputable place to get these older firmware's.
I definitely don't want to brick my PS3 downloading it from wherever.

Edit1: NM found it on the PS3 boards
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/P...k/m-p/36966406

Edit2: Couldn't get the PS3 to update in safe mode, it said "data is corrupted 8002F2C5"
I tried to update to 2.80 with both a USB flash drive and SD card.

I'll try downloading the update files again, but I doubt this is the problem. My set-up never corrupts any other files I download.
Is there anyway to CRC check that the files I have are 100% the same as the official ones after download?

Sony wants $150 to repair this PS3 that already cost $600 to buy at launch.

Is there any other way to flash the firmware chip besides with the Sony tools on the PS3? I'm guessing no, as that would open the PS3 to firmware hacks.

Well if that turns out to be the only alternative to fix the issue, i would just scrape another $150 to add to that price and get a Slim. Then you can keep your BC PS3 and use the Slim for the newer firmware required stuff.
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

He is lucky it is only $150 for Sony to repair his BC PS3 unit.

Here in Canada, Sony repairs are handled by a third-party called MTCSERVICE.COM

    The prices are as follows:
    • PS1 - $45.70
    • PS2 - $73.45
    • PSP - $89.27
    • PSPgo - $134.47
    • PS3 slim - $168.37
    • PS3 no BC - $190.97
    • PS3 w/ BC - $224.87

The joke of course is PS1 repairs and PS2 repairs.

But for his launch BC model of PS3 the repair cost here in my land is $224.87, and that does NOT include YOUR shipping cost to THEM to fix it. -- Just return shipping! -- So add about another $30 on top of that price!

If you can get a hold of a new game, buy, borrow, or rent, they have the FW on the disc and you know it´s not corrupted. I´m not sure what´s the latest FW included with games. I think Uncharted 2 requires 2.8 but I´m not sure. Anything more recent might have a higher FW.
I hope you get it worked out. It always worries me to see another ps2 compatible ps3 with problems.

I still believe that the firmware chip itself is the culprit.

If anyone knows of a list with games that definitely have the firmware update on the disc I would appreciate it.
I'll try that as my last resort.
If that doesn't work I'll just give up on this particular console streaming netflix movies.

You could try option #3 in the "recovery menu" which is called "restore file system" -- I done that on a few machines, and it has gotten rid of reading problems, and weird 800 messages.

Normally if there is a problem with the firmware chip itself you get the RSOD instead once it completes the last update stage!

Well I tried the restore file system method: nothing changed

I also bought MW2 and tried to install the update from disc.
    Still failed with same error.

Oh well maybe geohot, and xorloser's continued exploration of the PS3 will yield something I can use to fix this in the future.
Until that time I'll just not buy any games that need a newer firmware than what I have
