Hi,
It was given to me an PS3 with broken BR, and FW 1.97.
When updating to 3.41, frozen at 99% and rebbots....No more image since then.........
Read a lot about it and i need to enter in recovery mode to unbrick, but since it had FW 1.97, this menu don't exist...
Tried reformatting HDD, new HDD, .self on USB stick and nothing... Any help??

You need to enter Factory service mode. Then copy Rogero 3.6 CFW and lvl2diag.self(1) to a fat32 formatted stick. Insert this stick to nearest usb port to the bd drive. And power on ps3. After some amounts of time it'll be power off itself. After that copy the second lvl2diag.self to the usb stick and power on.Then ps3 power down itself. Power on ps3, Then should be ok.

I just experimented this procedure yesterday, but it doesn't work for me... (tried with 3 different usb sticks)
I've tried the rogero FW like you've said, tried with a bunch of other FW ( oficial and custom) and nothing...
I've read somewhere that i "could" resolve this problem with a FW called resetfirm (+/-m 10Mb), but i couldn't find it anywhere....
Since i have a PSP with CFW, i've tried the ps3jig (cause i don't have any other Jig), connected the PSP to PS3 and it all runned like it should (like i've read it in a tut) but the PS3 is still in the same behavior...
I turn it on, no image and after about 1 or 2 minutes, shuts down itself....
Any other ideas?? I've stayed awake till 6 o'clock, sleeped till 7 and woke up to come to work....
but tottaly demoralised.....

All hope may not be lost. Don't give up man. Hang in there. Try this. Use the ps3jig to enter fsm. Console should turn itself off. If you want blue ray movie playback capability you will need to backup your dev_2 flash and dev_3 flashbefore trying this. You can use preloader lvl2diag to accomplish this. If you don't know how or can't figure this out let me know and I will fix/do it for you and upload the necessary files. Moving on. You got this black screen because you tried to update to a regular pup that checks for bd board when you didn't have one,or at least one that is working. Now you can fix this issue by either reinstalling the same firmware you are on which is 1.97 or you can downgrade using fsm to a lower firmware. First you need to use minverchecker to see how low you can go. After you figure this out, you will need to get the pup you want to go to, and then make a mfw of this with nobd check. Then put the mfw you made on root of USB with the step1 lvl2diag for downgrading and stick it in right USB port. After it is done it will shut off. Then you need to format the USB and put step 2 lvl2diag for downgrading which will exit fsm. After you get it back up and working, you will need to go bakc into fsm to restore your dev_flash files you backed up for blue ray movie playback. Then you can update to rogero v3.6 because it has nobd check. Then you can remarry a drive if you would like. People say it has a bad blue ray drive, when really it is a bad bd board.

hi,
Thanks for all the support man,
I really don't know how to backup dev_2 and dev_3, but sincerely i want only to play games, not to view br movies...
The ps3 came without any laser, that should be the reason for that error and this result... I've tried the update while waiting for the new laser to arrive, since i've bought one online... I know, very BIG mistake (dumb!!)
Later i will try the steps above you mentioned and crossing my fingers while doing it. I'll post results
And thanks for your kind words - "All hope may not be lost. Don't give up man. Hang in there" - this boost my mind up, u r super hyper mega cool

To be honest man, the console has no idea wether or not there is a laser, so that isn't the problem. It could be a faulty bd drive board that is the problem, because during an update it does check for that. Anyway, I wouldn't want you to loose the capability to play blue ray movies. It isnt a hard step to do and I will help you with it. Just let me know if you havent already done the above steps and we can backup the dev_flashes. If you really don't care about that, then follow the steps above minus that part. Let me know if anything works or doesn't work and make sure to be patient and pay close attention. If something goes wrong you will need to know exactly what step and what happened so we can asses the issue. Good luck bro. If you need me to, I can upload step folders of what you need like step 1 use thes files, step 2 use these files, so n and so fourth.
Edit....I just thought about something. Have you tried taking the hard drive out and turning it on with no hard drive in? It will come up to an error saying cannot start correct hard drive not found. Then turn it off and put the hard drive back in, and it may be fixed. That would be the easy thing to try first.

man, it didn't worked....
I've verified the minimum FW acceptable by ps3 ( 1.90, MB SEM-001), did exactly what you've said, but nothing.
But there is something weird, i've done ps3jig and ps3 has shut down. Putted the lvl2diag. self (1) and 1.90 FW (renamed) but the console still shuts down after 1 or 2 minutes. The weird part is that if the console was reading the usb stick, the LED must blink to show us that is having data transfering. In this case, the LED is not blinking like it should..He recognizes the usb stick (cause the led blinks like heart pumping) but supposely it must blink intermitently if there is some data transfering. Mine does not do this... I've tried again with other usb sticks, and happens the same.
I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the lvl2diag. self files i've got. I've downloaded them with a pack to downgrade to 3.41, but supposely they are all the same, right?

The console is suppose to shut down after downgrading to the provided pup. Did you turn it back on to see if the console works now? Not all lvl2diag are the same. They call upon different tasks. Like the preloader lvl2diag asks the ps3 to backup the dev_flash files and things like that. The rsod asks the ps3 to rewrite the vtrm sector of the flash. The downgrading lvl2diags is what you need. One ask the console to downgrade to the provided pup, and the step 2 lvl2diag asks the console to leave fsm. Make sure you have the right ones. Did you try to remove the hard drive and turn the console on?

yes, i've already tried without hdd.
The lvl2diag. self that i have is from a package for downgrade. I´ve tried the steps religiously, all the times i've tested i did from the begining to the end (ps3 jig, self + pup and self(2) ) many times over, but the console always have thatr behavior.
I've explained the behavior os the usb stick cause after putting stick with self and pup, it shuts down too quickly. I think it does not install the FW... i don't know if the ps3jig is really functioning.... but it does send the response and give me an ok....
