PS3 Stuck in Boot Loop (Not the Usual One...)
PS3 Stuck in Boot Loop (Not the Usual One...) –
Hi guys, Don't worry I'm sure this will be a bit more complex than the normal stuff...
Basically, I got given a PS3 (Fat Model) from a friend to repair... (bit different from the xbox 360s and Wii's I usually do, but I'll still have a crack at it...)
I believe I have identified it as a 40GB (Only has 2 USB Ports at the front, no Card readers under the flap and has a Hard Drive that pulls straight out rather than to the side then out...)
Anyway, I'll get to the issue and what I have tried so far...
When I got given this PS3 to repair, it had no Hard Drive installed nor was the flap covering the hard drive bay or the cradle there either...
I purchased a Western Digital 320GB hard drive as I had used one previously to upgrade a 60GB PS3 to and I knew that would work good...
When I first installed this Hard Drive it went on about having to format the drive blah blah blah... so I did the 'Press the PS button' thing to sync the controller up via USB cable and progressed onto installing firmware...
This maybe the tricky part: - I had planned on installing a Hacked firmware on this PS3 so it could run Homebrew software, I downloaded ReBug 3.55 firmware and copied it to 'PS3->UPDATE' on a 512MB, 2GB and 4GB Flash Disk (Yes I did try multiple Flash Disks and different File systems (FAT or FAT32))
I attempted to install this firmware straight out of the box rather than installing a genuine one first then doing this...
Everything was going great until it reached 43% then it came up with an error code and decided it would offer me the change to wait for 60seconds so it could loop this crap all over again... I tried removing the Hard Drive at the start of some of the update attempts and it got to 99% but failed with an error code again (sorry I don't have these codes to hand, because the PS3 takes sooooo fu**ing long to find firmware on the Flash Drive, then decide what it wants to do with it, then makes you wait longer again before it decides to apply the update I don't feel like waiting for all that crap again now just to get some error codes...) I have also tried a Genuine firmware of 2.36, 2.41 and 2.50 (all failing in the 42%-46% mark... I have tried to get into recovery a silly number of times with no Joy, when I hold the Power Switch, it beeps once (Tells me its turned on) then beeps a second time (I assume this is the Video Reset part) and the third beep turns the console off... So I assume that the partially loaded firmware that is installed doesn't support Recovery yet..? So then I decided I would try this Service mode stuff (Got my HTC Dream/G1 Android phone out, flashed the custom recovery and did the service mode thing from there, that ended in a Red Screen of Death thing and I had to recover that with the 2 (File 1 and File 2) Recovery files found in numerous parts of the web...
So now, after all that, I am back to square one, if I initialize the Hard Drive in Windows Storage Managment, it will ask me if I want to format the drive again which is good I guess, and it will keep failing at the same point(s) all the time...
I assume it has something to do with the Hard Drive as it got to 99% so I guess the 70ish% BlueRay drive possibility is out of the question... but my Question is what could be wrong with the drive, I have tried another identical 320GB drive and it did the exact same thing, one of these drives ended up in a 60GB model as an Upgrade so I know the drive is working fine!
Shall I pop the thing open and inspect? (Any pointers what I may be looking for?)
Any help would be most appriciated with this guys!?
p.s. Sorry for writing this essay but hopefully it will answer some questions before they get asked...
Sounds like it was on 3.56 or 3.60 already? 3.56 removed the recovery mode...
Ahhh thats certainly shedding some light then, so It may be failing at the 40ish% part because i'm effectively trying to 'downgrade' the firmware when really if I want a working PS3 I am to just attempt to flash the 3.60FW instead?
And if it is already on that much of a high FW, why does it say the message insert a USB Flash drive with 2.36 or later firmware on it..? I would have thought this meant that its running 2.36 no?
Not sure what error message it would give in this context as I've never tried flashing lower firmware.
If it does already have 3.56 or 3.60 then the only way to go to get PS3 working again is to flash with that same firmware as there's no way to downgrade. But maybe hang back on doing that just yet in case I'm wrong - cos once you do there's no going back. Maybe someone else can shed some light in the meantime...
Good luck bro
this is guaranteed to work...it happened the same way on my friend's ps3
stupid update loops...goes to a certain % and gives an error code...
you'll need a screwdriver and a torx T9 or torx T10 screwdriver
take the ps3 apart and clear the battery cios.to do this..you need to take the little battery (watch-type battery) out and short the pins...by placing a metal object (flat head screwdriver would work, but GENTLY).. gently between the pins...this will discharge and clear your memory
also...you should update to 3.55 first before doing CFW...just to be safe...plus you are on firmware 2.36 if it asks for 2.36 or later...
Ahhh, I read somwhere that clearing the CMOS settings/battery would help, Ye, ok I'll try this then report back
Also, I noticed thar ReBug do 2 different versions of the CFW 3.41 and 3.55, what's the difference and therefore which one would be the better choice in this instance?
Bro... have you tried changing the hdd? I just a phat here, with the same problem. But it's FW was 2.15. So, there wasn't a Recovery Menu available too. Try changing the hdd and post some news. Hope this could help you.
