Anyway I find it hard to believe that it's a coincidence that it worked perfectly in the afternoon and in the evening after I took with my in a bag it's stopped reading discs.. it was sitting there nicely and gently but maybe in the car a bump or something shaken something up inside.. don't know..

I'll try and have it checked, if it's not something minor i'll sell it cause i'm not big on the idea of discless + my hdd is only 65 (you never get the full 80) and you can't put more than 10 games max in it, just bought a external HDD 1TB, i'm not going to invest in this console any further with no warranty and 3 years of age.

Anyone here got any idea though if there's a way to fix the drive if maybe by my description the lens isn't dead or something?
idk how much you bought it for... but you bought a lemon and the guy knew that when hes sold it to you... I'd just sell it if you repair the lens something else might break

Not trying to protect the guy, don't care for him, but how can he know? can he predict the future? a drive is either reading bluray or not reading, nothing in the middle, it read them when I checked it at his place and it read it for 2 weeks.
More likely took a hit when it was in the bag when I went with it to a friend.

Dunno seems pretty strange... well a repair will cost atleast 80-100 bucks or you can just sell it I guess... but tbh if the console looks pretty good on the outside id just get it repaired

An original DVD didn't work, never tried CD, guess it wouldn't either.. It's mind boggling to me how all of a sudden it stopped working and I tend to blame it on the fact that I took with me in a bag and it probably got shaken up in the car or whatever, how gentle is that shit?
For now i'm running most of my games discless with pkg or from external with direct boot, some aren't working, i'm leaning towards selling it with the games inside to a person that wants a JB console, in the price I bought it and then buying a new Slim with a warranty although there aren't a lot of places with 3.55 and many stores here wants an extra 80 bucks for the 3.55, thieves, so i'll sell only if i'll get a nice price.. called some stores and some can't even tell what fw their consoles are..
The ones that want more money for 3.55 are selling a 3.66 160GB for 420$ and a 3.55 for about 500$.

OP, your problem sounds identical to my problem.

bought i phat 80 gig ps3 last oct. drive worked for a month.

after that, nothing read. little clock in the upper right hand just kept spinning forever.

read a ton of sites and most likely needed laser replacement.

i've worked inside computers before but was also apprehensive of gutting my ps3.

took my time, watched the you tube videos and had the web pages open with pics and directions.

lots of sites that sell the replacements, so my total cost was just buying the part ~$50.

it wasnt nearly as bad as i thought. no soldering or anything complicated. a few screws here and there and you can be back up and running.

First of all, thanks for the comment mate..

You're saying that you've replaced only the lens by yourself and now it's working flawless again?
Thing is, i'm not that good with that kind of stuff, afraid to ruin it even more, I can replace a video\memory card on my PC but that's about it, not a handyman that's for sure..
I'm not really sure if I should invest any further in this console, shit can get broken again.. maybe i'm better off selling it and getting a slim.

for now though most of my games work discless, except for the ones that are known to not play discless (eg. mortal kombat), but the PKG method is killing my HDD space cause it's mostly on the internal.

I can understand not wanting to open up the console to repair.

i was very intimidated myself. but if you can replace a video card or ram in your pc, i think you can do it. you may be scared, as i was , but read the tutorials over a few times. watch the you tube videos and you should be fine.

the problem with trying to buy another, is there is no guarantee it will be on OFW below 3.55.

the unit i bought was pre 3.41 and i updated to 3.41 to use dongle. i was on 3.41 when my drive went bust.

not sure if you mentioned how much your cost was but i picked up my 80 g phat unit for $125 and adding the cost of laser replacement still puts me below $200 total, so im fine with it. if i wanted to sell the unit now, i could probably make money on it.

but i recommend considering the laser replacement. worse thing that happens is you aren't successful.

I've watched videos and it seems too complicated and sensitive, wouldn't want to mess things even more..
If I'll buy a new one I won't buy it if it isn't 100% 3.55 OFW or below, even though some dumb shits at some stores I called couldn't tell what FW they got.

The thing with buying a lens and replacing it isn't really worthy to me, if I won't sell & replace I may as well keep it as it is, 90% of my games work now.
Maybe it's the entire drive and not only the lens, I bought mine (80GB, used) for 335$ with 2 controllers+HDMI+game and I may sell it to someone - with a cfw and games in it and only one controller for the same amount.
A new one at the stores around here costs 450$-480$ tops, slim, 160GB , warranty and most of all it ain't 3 years old.
Fixing it will cost me between 60$ to 80$, buying a new one will cost me about 115$.. it's pretty easy to see why it's the ideal option.
If I won't sell it eventually to the people that are interested, I'll keep it as it is, everything that I need still works, only 2 games don't work so far for me and I played them only once and the PS3 scene is mostly dead so there's not really something to look forward to that maybe won't work.
