ProblemSolved fw 3.5+

Hmm ps3 doesn't support usb 3.0 only 2.0 & 1.1 and im sure this is where your problem lays.
Usb 3.0 you say? Have not heard of that, it could be Firmware 3.41 doesn't have support for USB 3.0 where as 3.5 would. But it may for what ever reason may not be drawing enough power to turn itself on (unlikely but you never know)
if you have one Try using a USB Hub that's powered from a outlet, and plugging the passport into that. I'll do some googling and see what I can find for you mate.
I dont think that's the case, as USB 1.0 will support USB 2.0 (just at the speed of USB 1.0) so USB 2.0 ports (which the PS3 has) SHOULD support 3.0. Also notice he said his 3.5 phat will recognize it shooting your theory in the foot.

Delete partition(s), re-create it, format with fat32format small utility.
My external WD USB also wasn't recognized until I did so (even though it was formatted as FAT32 and my PS2 slim saw it and successfully run backups from it). It's an earlier model than Passport (Elements line), but still it may help.
Gonna be honest, (being tired) that picture means nothing to me atm. Have you tried running it through a powered hub (if you have access to one) like this ThinkGeek :: Mini 4-Port Powered USB Hub the fact it's powered externally rather then from the PS3 may get it working without the need to case swap.
Hey! I just noticed that the usb 3.0 WD HDDs has an issue with ps3 slim , because I'm using my WD 3.0 1tb Hdd on my ps3 Fat and it's working fine , I just tried to plug it to my ps3 slim and did not work.
any way I found a very easy solution (tested by my) and it's working 100%
you just need to plug a usb hub into your ps3 slim then plug you hard drive in the hub!
try it and tell me the result
the usb hub is very cheap
it looks like this

i think the problem is with the usb connector! cheap usb connectors are not working for my hd! i am not sure with this
Got my WD Passport today (same one as OP). Tried formatting the drive as both logical and primary but the ps3 doesn't recognise it, works fine on 360.
1. USB 3.0 is not the issue. It is fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 hosts.
2. WD is problematic for alot of users. I had a 1TB that my PVR would only recognize once I deleted the WD partitions from the drive. I highly recommend all WD users delete the WD crap off the drive.
3. I would guess this is a power issue. This is likely a laptop 2.5" drive that is powered by the system. The USB port on the slim probably doesn't have enough power to spin up the drive.
Use a powered USB hub between the drive and PS3 and you should be fine.
