PS3 Slim turns off after 5 seconds
PS3 Slim turns off after 5 seconds –
Everything was fine a few days ago but it stopped working today. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary.
While in standby mode, after I hit the power button, it beeps, standby light turns green, power and eject buttons are lit, the fan is running, the disc is spinning. After 5 seconds the whole system shuts down and the standby light turns off. The red light only turns back on after I press the power button again. Also "no signal" is displayed on the tv all thruout.
I've tried plugging it directly into a wall outlet, switched ac adapters, powering on with the rc, holding down the power to reset (it beeps then immediately shuts down) but nothing works.
I'd send it back to Sony but it conveniently stopped working not even 2 weeks after the warranty expired.
I've searched the internet and found that this has happened to a few others but no definite solutions have been provided other than getting a new system or replace PSU.
Help please and many thanks
System model# CECH-2501A
Hold down the power button till it shuts off then hold the power again till in beeps two times this will bring you to the recovery menu if this works try to system reset see if that works
Also after it beeps does it have a yellow light where the red should be?
Nope it doesnt work. The system still shuts off completely after 5 seconds. No yellow light at all

maybe try doing this. have the system completely off, if its a phat then switch off at the back, if its slim then remove power cable.
then hold the eject button and power it on, after which let go of the eject button. that will initiate a fan test where the fan spins very fast blowing out any air from the insides. works on selected models only,
Can you open the recovery menu?
Accessing the PS3 Recovery Menu (Safe Mode)
With the system in standby mode. Press and hold the power button down until the system turns on and then off again. Release the power button. Very important to hold the power button until the console shuts off and to release the power button before continuing to step 2.
After about 1 - 2 seconds press and hold the power button again, until you hear 2 consecutive beeps. Release the power button. During this step you will actually here three beeps. There will be one single beep then a short delay followed by the 2 consecutive beeps. Only release the the power button after the 2 consecutive beeps.
You will then be instructed to plug in a controller, via the usb cord, and press the PS button.
At this point the PS3 Recovery Menu will be shown on the screen.
His system shuts off completely with no lights showing. This is probably a power supply issue. I am pretty sure if this was not a power supply issue, when the console shuts down he should still see a red light. In this case there are no lights.
evilOvum: I have the slim version. What is the purpose of a fan test? When I did it, the fan did spin really fast for about 15 seconds and the system shut off completely again. The only button that worked was the eject button; it beeps three times when I press it. Power button is non-responsive and the red light only shows up after I unplug and replug the power cord.
Scaper: Can't access the recovery menu. In step 1 when I hold the power button down in standby mode, the light turns green, 1 beep 4 seconds later and everything turns off 1 second after that. At the start of step 2 is the light supposed to be red? Because it's not. When I press and hold at step 2, the red light turns on but I've held it for max one minute and haven't heard any consecutive beeps
Lethal_NFS: Sounds about right. That's what I've been reading thus far. Know of any remedy to this?
You can get a slim power supply on Ebay from $25-$50 if you want to replace it and see it works.
just to let everyone know its not a power supply issue it is either a ylod symptom (i know the slim does not display ylod) or a software problem, in some rare cases i guess it could be a power supply but all the ones i have come in contact with this has not been the case.
If someone has ever fixed this, please let me know. I just replaced a bad fan(getting worse but still working) for a buddy tonight on his PS3-Slim. I tested it before I did ANYTHING. The system worked fine. (I did NOT replace any thermal paste, etc.) When I put everything back together, I get the symptoms listed above verbatim.I would assume it would be the thermal paste and it is now not making proper contact with the heat sinks(my assumption) and shutting down. Am I missing anything here? I've been modding stuff for 10 years, so I am not a newbie when it comes to this. However, something has gone awry. Here is a link to a video with exactly whats happening. (I did not make the video) I couldn't post the full link as I haven't posted alot here. but its w w w . y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ? v = k j U P v X n E O M 8
