What should i be looking for when looking at it and does anyone have a guide on how i can change it if its broken?
hmmm, idk. if it were me i'd probably turn the ps3 off, remove the top of the drive, put a disc on the spindle, put the magnet on it so the disc doesn't go flying, tape all of the sensors so they are down, then turn the ps3 on and see if it spins and reads the disc.
i cant since there is a plastic bit like shown in the video separating the spindle from the magnet like shown in the video
hi, yes i have had this a few times and it is always the laser or a motor for me, you said that you bought it off ebay did you read the add fully as some of the seller sell full decks as new ones when they state in the add that they will poss supply a second hand deck with a new laser fitter, this could of cause mean that one of the motors could have gone on the deck and the laser will be at best a china's finest one so also could go at any time, i would try and get another deck else where and try that failing that it could be the logic board but for me these are few and far between at going faulty and i repair/downgrade 10/15 a week and i have only ever had a faulty mirco switch if some one has opened it up before me and been a little rough with the drive.
did you push the laser to the back of the drive and see if it moved forward when you put a disc in? as this will tell you if the motor is ok then we can move on from there,
Hi vampman
1) I tried putting in a cd and a dvd and it still gives me the same problem
2) The laser does move to the front when i insert a disc in
3) The logic board is fine as i was able to boot a backup of sniper elite v2 with multiman
4) On the ebay page under the description for the mechanism the seller says its brand new
