I purchased a used/as is PS3 Slim Cech-2001b 250gb model. The person that I bought it from said that the disc drive wasn't working and that they tried to clean the lens to see if that would fix the issue. Obviously, it didn't. So I figured I would try my luck.

I got it home and opened it up. Noticed that there were some brown marks on the outer casing of the drive and on the ribbon cable, like something got burned. Plugged it in and tried to see what was going on. Found out that the disc neither accepts nor ejects discs. Took the metal casing off the drive and didn't see any damage to any internal parts of the drive but noticed that the lens/motor did not move or try to read a disc. I then disconnected the drive board from the drive, booted it up, and the lens and motor moved back/forth up/down just fine but still not accepting discs. So then I thought it might be the drive board got switched out with another and the original was no longer married to the mobo. After reading other forums and help sites, I found out that I could check if my drive board was the original by downloading a demo for the Playstation Store. I set up my PSN account, and downloaded Bejewled 2. I started playing the game but then the video would cut in and out. I would lose picture for about 2-3 seconds and get a picture for about 5 seconds. But it was playable. I downloaded another game to be sure; Aqua Panic; and that demo ran perfectly.

So now I'm stuck on to what my problems is. The lens/motor moves without drive board; and drive board will play demos; but still not accepting discs. Any ideas on what I can try next? Im not sure if a certain part of the drive board got messed up and not communicating with the lens/motor or what. Any help would be greatly aprreciated. Thanks!

Ok I can try that out when I get off work. It would be nice if that would be all that it needs. Everything was erased when I bought it but I don't know if anything actually got formatted. What do you mean by clearing contacts to the drive?

Well I tried to go into recover mode and restore file system, restore database and restore PS3 system. Drive is still not accepting discs and laser/motor is still not working. Any other suggestions? I'm curious as to what the burn marks were from.. Like I said it was on the outer casing of the drive and it was also on the ribbon cable? Maybe just a bad ribbon cable? Because the lens/motor moves when it's disconnected.

The slim version doesn't have a sensor in it. I cleaned the contacts and restored file system again. Every time I do it though it says hard disk corrupt so Im going to do a full system restore as well and then try again.

I decided to take the casing off the power supply to see if anything was going on there since every time I plugged in the drive board cable, I get no power to the lens/motor. There seems to be a couple of brown marks on the bottom of the power supply board but nothing seems to look like it needs replaced. Im thinking that there may have been a short somewhere and maybe that's why I'm not getting power while the cable is connected.

After full restore is done, I'll try another Restore File System and I'll also try to get some pics up of the power supply and such. Thanks for the help!

Replace the HDD and go to recovery menu and reload the system update (same update via USB KEY).
