PS3 Orgininal overheats Q
PS3 Orgininal overheats Q –
hey i bought a 40gb launch model that didnt play games off ebay for 70 dollars.
its my first ps3.
i opened it up the day it came in the mail, cleaned it out. put new thermal paste in.
then i cleaned the laser off.
since then i have backup up around 20 games that my brother and i had kickin around.
i play them off the usb and internal (i upgraded to a 500gb internal) the games play super fine.
then one day i update multiman. i burn south park for psone.
once it shows the playstation logo the system says its overheating in the top corner.
im just curious why i can play ps3 games with a ps3bd game in , but when a cd-r is in the system it overheats.
sorry to reply to my own thread but it wont let me edit because it thinks im posting links, which i am not,
i am just wondering why my ps3 can watch blu ray and play ps3 games but a psone disc makes it display overheat messages.,,,
now its really odd. i just played duke nukem for quite a while then put a retail final fantasy vii in the system. the fan goes apeshit. maybe ps3+cd based stuff is just bad.
im tempted to try the backup of south park again. i always use the more expensive and better discs. i guess i could use the ps2 but that has a controller cord lol
if i was you i'd fan mod it straight away, never have overheating problems again
and guys, which chip emulates ps1/2? cell or rsx?
wats the best fan mod?

The way the fan on my console is not very well pl;aned out because the fan isnt blowing the on the heatsink. it sucks the heat from the heatsink in, then blows the heat out, instead of just blowing the heat out through the heatsink
2 Playstation 3 Phat Models
CECHE01 for Jailbreak
80GB Internal + 200GB External
CECHK01 for PSN
which model do you have? 40GB PS3 with the Memory Card Reader?. Those models have the same problem overheating and general hardware problems, Why?, dunno
well its a 40gb without the card reader. i just find it odd how if i put in a psone disc straight away itll get real loud and turn off. but if i play duke nukem off usb for ps3 for a bit, then switch out the blu ray for a psone disc, it doesnt overheat/ very peculiar behavior
actually, im starting to think maybe when i cleaned the system that i did a poor job on thermal paste. apparently you are supposed to glob it in the middle and let it spread on its own. i used a credit card to apply mine and so that gives bubbles right?
my system blows super cold air out the back yet it works so hard, never gets warm to the touch
Overheating issue is always thermal paste, but you will also have to remove the heatspreaders (the 2 plates that are stuck to the GPU and CPU) and change the thermal paste underneath. If you only change the thermal paste on the heatsink, it won't help much.

PS3 Slim CECH-3004A 160GB
PS2 Slim SCPH-70004 - FMCB 1.8b
i looked up heatspreader. ugh now that sh^t looks a bit more tedious to clean. thanks for the info. i was really hoping i wouldnt have to go any deeper than that
Check out killerbugs fan mods
I use one and it's awesome, been using it for 5 month. My console is post ylod since february, when it was fixed I got it reflowed and a simple layer of arctic silver 5. It still got warm, which I didn't like as I wanted to avoid another ylod. I ordered the fan mod and installed to increase the fan speed, now it never heats up.
Pereb27 is right, yeah if you have cool air flowing in your current set up, then the heat sink isn't working properly.
the real reason for overheating problems is because the fan isn't effective , and this causes people to go crazy and think of all sorts of things to cool down the Rsx and cell, without fixing the real problem - the fan sucks.
Buy a fan mod, crank up the speed, put a layer Of as5 and leave it
