PS3 no video green light

I got an old ps3 with the 4usb ports. Put a new HDD fat32 formatted in it (got it without a hdd). Turn it on and can't get any video to show up using either HDMI or the composite cables. Tried the recover method, get the beeps but still no display.

Thoughts on this?

There's a few things to look at

1) Did you just buy the PS3? If so you might have bought a semi-brick that would need a hardware flasher to fix
2) Did you try the video reset? Turn it off completely, press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. It's similar to trying to get into recovery menu. Just make sure you let go of the power button after the second beep. The first one counts as when you press and hold power
3) The internal PS3 drive is NOT FAT32. It's encrypted SPUFS. If you have a USB enclosure connect it to your PC and delete the partition and create a new primary unformatted partition using a free tool like EaseUS partion manager

Not sure he really knew what he was doing. He did take the HDD out that's about it.

Tried the reset and don't get anything whatsoever.

Tried the internal as fat32 (usually the ps3 would reformat it for me) tried unnallocated by deleting partition, nothing.


when I press the power button the tv knows something is connected there's a pause in the floating 'no signal' searching for signal but remains as No Signal.

Could be hardware? It's the old ps3. CECHA01

It works best when you delete the partition and create a new unformatted partition. Just deleting the partition or using a fat32 formatted drive causes problems. There's also problems with the connection between PS3 and your HDMI TV that causes it to hang like that. There's been a few times that unplugging both my PS3 and TV for about 5 minutes and plugging them both back in will force them to re-sync

Nope, still nothing. I can hear the fan, get the beeps and all that but nothing shows up on the tv. Whether I use composite or HDMI it doesn't matter.

could be semi bricked? easy or difficult to fix that?
Any other thoughts?

If you bought a PS3 for that cheap then you bought a problem. And you knew that and he could of told you anything you dont know the diagnostics on that unit.

Sounds to me you bought junk... send it to a pro to fix it or sell it

kid was a young college kid that had the looks of mommy and daddy lending generously (as is the case for most in his area). Think he just wanted to get rid of it and thought he could get a couple bucks.

figure if the bluray drive works that part could be worth the small investment. Worst case scenario, cheap gamble.

I did see youtube videos of a 4 penny trick where they had the same problem this one is having. Anyone have any experience with this?
But you mention sending it to a pro. Any in mind? or just a craiglist thing?

Well if the warranty seal is still intact then there is a good chance of the Ps3 being restored. I DO NOT recommend you following some kid in their mothers basement tutorial on youtube because you really would make a big deal out of something that could be small.

Look at the cosmetic condition of the Ps3 is there scratches on the unit? Why was the HD removed? All I can say if the Warranty seal has been removed then you are F***ed because the ps3 has already been tampered with.

If I would ever buy a used Ps3 the main thing I would look for is the Warranty Seal or the cosmetic condition of the Ps3. No Fat ps3 should have any scratches because of the glossy finish that prevent scratches. So if I see scratches that mean that the ps3 was not kept in good condition. Also a no brainer if the warranty seal was broken into I am not buying that shit. Worst case scenario if the BLU ray drive die I can always replace it knowing the warranty seal was never broken.

Check for some reliable mod shops that specialize in Ps3's in your area or check on ebay for users with high feedback and recommendations. On the repair costs you might was well bought a working unit because now you will be spending more money than you had to in the first place.

I have fixed some 'no video' before with reflow. It can be worse than YLOD. GPU could be finished. reball with new RSX may be only fix.
Does a controller power and sync or is the USB port also 'dead'?
If the USB port functions I'd give a fairly good odds that a GPU reflow will work, if done right of course.

warranty seal there and all usb ports work but the controller does not sync, just charges.

he had said he took the harddrive because he could use it as a portable (i'd probably do the same if I was him)

GPU reflow... how is that done, how much does that cost?
