Hi, Is it possible to make ps3 as a mediaserver by its own? What video format ca it play?

I'm still thinking which one to buy the slim one or the fat one where you could install another os.

If I buy a fat ps3 and install a ubuntu on it. Does anybody know if I can install ps3mediaserver on the PS3? And how hard it is to install ubuntu? Do I just need the installer, how about the bootloader?

    Sorry about all the questions.

If you install Ubuntu, I don't see why you couldn't run ps3mediaserver. Not sure what dependencies it needs, but either way...

From what I understand, Ubuntu isn't that hard. I'd get the image for the install right now if you were going to do it.

I'm not quite understanding your question, though. Are you trying to make your PS3 a media server, or stream media to your PS3? Either way, PS3mediaserver will probably be your best bet.

The 60GB model is the best ps3 i have 1 it is 100% compatible with all ps2 games and is the best in my opinion the second best is the 80GB model there is 2 of them 1 is partially compatible with ps2 games and the other 1 is not compatible at all with ps3 games. The 80GB model that is compatible with some ps2 games has 4 USB ports and the 1 that isnt has 2 USB ports that is how to tell. The slim ps3 sucks i wouldnt get it unless you just want a basic ps3 becouse you aint getting much with a ps3 slim. The 60GB model has the other OS option so you can install a OS it has 4 USB ports and memory stick pro duo slot and SD memory card slot it is the most feature rich. IT does run slightly warm compared to other ps3 models so i recommended a fan for it.

My advice is to get the 60GB model stay away from the 20GB 40GB and the non compatible 80GB model and the slim.all the other models besides the 60GB model Sony has taken features away to cheapen the ps3 down. You could look for a 60GB model on ebay or gamestop.com those are the 2 most likely places you may find that model you cant buy the 60GB model in stores any more sony dont make them any more.

All 60GB model ps3 are 100% backwards compatible. Here in the US there is only 1 60GB model and there are 2 80GB models. Here is a chart that will explain it with model numbers it is probably for NTSC consoles only im not in the EU so i dont know about PAL models but maybe this will help you.

the 80GB PS3 from the MGS4 bundle was the last version that has PS2 backward compatibility. OpenPS2Loader also works for 80GB PS3 mentioned above.

the slim PS3 isn't totally useless. the slim is like 32-33% both lighter and smaller from it's predecessor. the console also runs quieter and cooler (helps in dealing with ylod issue). minor hardware peripherals have been removed (as in a 2nd OS install feature). besides, linux wasn't very fast and installing it isn't easy either.

60GB console enthusiasts get the best of extra features including PS2 gameplay but they'll have to compromise with older hardware flaws while the slim users enjoy a more refined console with less flaws. .

You can't use PS3mediaserver on linux on a ps3: linux for ps3 is built for the powerpc architecture, and can only use packages designed for that. PMS hasn't been, at least as far a I've been able to find.

You can run Mediatomb though. I'm using it now on a fat to allow me to copy files larger than 4gb to my slim without splitting them. I haven't been able to serve files and watch them in real time, but I haven't really tried. Might be doable with some tweaking.

Disadvantage of Mediatomb compared to PMS: Mediatomb doesn't transcode. You have to do that yourself using Avidemux or something similar.

    Hope this helps.

How can a ps3 not be compatible at all with ps3 games? Then what kind of a ps3 is it? A PS3 that only runs ps2 games?

I'm just joking! I found out this error while reading this post and just decided to have some fun, no hard feelings!

    PS3 60GB are exploitable

To get a "native" media file for the PS3, iTunes, AppleTV or XBox 360, I’d recommend www.handbrake.fr it works like a charm. The format is called m4v, it will also play m2ts from videocameras and BD disks.

If you want to get serious on HD source, I recommend: http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/c...er-p-2593.html
and an eSATA external HDD, did I hear 2TB?

Planet Earth wastes about 100GB of HDD
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is about 90GB of HDD space

Myself I am waiting for an eSATA DroboPro.
