PS3 Locks Up after recent YLOD Fix...
PS3 Locks Up after recent YLOD Fix... –
Ok, so, My PS3 (Phat of course) YLOD'd on me months ago. I finally got round to baking it and it then worked fine for a good few days. After having the PS on for about 10 hours straight (I went out but left it on) I was mid game and it froze, 3 beeps, then flashing red light.
Ever since then, It won't turn on for more than 20 seconds ish before it freezes and shuts itself off. This time however the "YLOD" is not the culprit - as the yellow light doesn't 'appear'. Plus, I've since re-baked it 3 times now and nothing changes.
Now, tbh, I'm happy to let this PS3 go to its grave but ONLY after I've copied some stuff off the internal hdd... and of course that means I need to revive it and keep it running for about 30 mins!
So, anyone had experience with anything like this? Like I say, It's not YLOD its something else. A/V is fine (HD Outputs as normal). HDD is not the issue as the same thing happens with no hdd / system mode etc etc. I've also stripped it down and had a huge fan blasting over the top whilst trying to make it run but no difference.
It doesn't follow a set time pattern as such... sometimes it works long enough to loads Comi's FileManager and start copying... I copied 186mb out of 300mb before the bloody thing froze. Other times it freezes before the XMB even loads properly. Once it freezes, and subsequent attempt freeze much quicker... have to leave it an hour or 3 before I can make it last longer than 20 seconds.
Thoughts? A diff area I should run the heat gun over?
All help appreciated
I only heat gun the GPU and that works 95% of the time. This is where most of the problems occur. Baking, you might have damaged some caps or something. Always replace thermal compound with good paste and the Fan NEEDS to be modded to increase cooling and prevent it failing again, heat is what caused YLOD in the first place. Do the Fan mod and it will probably last long enough to copy.
You know why these get ylod? Along with overheating, the fan sensors go out on older phat models. Which means, as your ps3 gets hotter, the fans dont do a damn thing.
One thing to notice, is if your fan EVER spins up faster.
With your ps3 being on for even 15-30 minutes you should hear the fan raising in speed. Or put your hand in the back and see how hot the air is, if any coming out.
Ive had two phat ps3's fry their fan temp control. Ive had to manually install a potentiometer to regulate the fan or it would CONSTANTLY over heat. It would work for hours, or a few minutes.
Sure glad I didnt pay $300 for this pile of shit.
I sussed what the problem was albeit no fix. After the YLOD it appears that now the HDMI chip or something has frazzled or part shorted. I suspect the moment it warms, the board flexs and something shorts therefore causing the freezing etc.
If I use Composite out instead of HDMI it works perfectly for hours. Just sh!t resolution
Oh well, good job I have a slim too!
I've found the only way to get any longevity from a re-flow on a PS3 is to pry off the GPUs heat spreader and replace the thermal compound between it and the chip die (the old compound has usually turned to dust). I use thin double-sided heat transfer tape to hold the spreader in place after cleaning the old epoxy off the spreader and ram-chips, rather than re-gluing. I also do the fan PWM mod.
