ps3 & jailbreaking general Q's
ps3 & jailbreaking general Q's –
just picked up a ps3 for cheap because it was "broken" aka needed a new power/eject board for $14. win
its a ps3 slim from 2009 cech-2001a.
now im looking to jailbreak it and have found tutorials and everything but i am interested in the basic info that accompanies modding, basically these questions, some of which may seem a little dumb, so please bare with me.
1. jailbreaking is essentially the same thing as flashing an xbox360?
1.5. is homebrew accompanied and part of the JBing?
2. the custom firmware is what we are installing allowing for playing of backups?
3. how does one go about not getting banned from online play, and what would get me banned?
4. with the newer cfw, are NTFS drives readable (for movies)?
5. BF3 is obviously a new wave game. i know it needs a new not-finished cfw, but i also read something about 1.01 update that cant be done on "older" ps3s, what are the facts here...?
6. I am on system firmware 3.5, whats the best route to get my backups playing?
7. Can i format the ps3's harddrive to a filesystem accessible by my pc such that i can boot games straight off of it?
I am mostly trying to play MGS and Batman (for now) as well as some older games which i assume work fine with the CFW for these 2 games, but is there anything else special i need to know.
i basically am looking for a little rundown of how it all works so i can then be caught up for future updates in the scene. i have knowledge of xbox360 mod stuff, so relating it to that (if easier) could be helpful.
For point 1: No, Jailbreak is not the same as flashing the DVD-Drive of the Xbox 360. Jailbreaking the PS3 either requires a USB Dongle (3.41 and lower) or custom system software (3.42 - 3.55). This firmware is the system software for the PS3 and has nothing to do with the firmware on the Blu-Ray drive.

For Point 2: Most people use a custom SYSTEM SOFTWARE to jailbreak the PS3.
For point 3: While on custom firmware you can not use PSN as there is no way to get on with the current allotment of custom firmware.
For point 4: As far as I know NTFS is not readable by the PS3 at all. They may be Homebrew apps that feature NTFS drivers that you can use with that particular homebrew app.
For point 5: Game executables are encrypted with a private key and the key is different between certain system software versions. We only have the keys for games that require up system software version 3.56. Any game that requires 3.60 and higher cannot be played on custom system software (minus a few exceptions like L.A. Noir)
For point 6: Get a custom system software of 3.55 and use the Multiman homebrew app to play backups. (The term "Backup" means that you installed the game you own and are in your possession to the hard drive. Once you no longer own a particular game you must delete it from the hard drive as it is illegal to still use it once you no longer have the original. No discussion of piracy here or you will get banned from these forums.)
For point 7: No, the internal PS3 hard drive is encrypted and cannot be accessed in with a computer.
Most games that require 3.60 or higher cannot be played on custom firmware as the game's executable is encrypted with key that no one is willing to share (due to being sued by Sony). Basically anything from Portal 2 and newer. Beware that some older games have been updated to require 3.60 or higher from a game update like with Gran Turismo 5.
Installing a custom system software to your PS3, while easy, has its risks. You can potentially "Brick" your PS3, rendering it useless. There are people here that are better at helping you than I am. I just have giving you some insight.
Basically, see what firmware version your system has. If it's 3.55 or below then install Kmeaw custom firmware on it by putting the PUP file on a USB stick ( folder /PS3/UPDATE) and going to system update.
awesome guys thank you so much.
got kmeaw up and running and chose multiman (for now)
next questions is how do i go about placing the games onto the hdd.
it seems like a huge hassle to put the game on an external drive, then use multiman to copy the game to the ps3 hdd..especially something like MGS4 which is 31 GB
ALSO, is multiman the software i will use to load the backup? and is there any homebrew software that allows playing of mkv files?
Hi there, my experience is limited with the ps3

when complete load up multiman again and select the game from your hdd and select Load.
this reboots the system into the XMB and you will see the game in your game menu and load it from there.
hope this helps.
