Let me start by saying that I realize a lot of people with the 60GB launch have had freezing issues but I'm not finding anything that seems exactly like my own situation.
About two months ago, I noticed that my PS3s fan would spin in stage 3 almost as soon as I started any game and games started to freeze. At this point I realized that it was overheating and decided to open it up and clean it out. This gave me about a week of play before it started to speed up again and freeze so I also decided to clean off and re-add heatsink compound to the PS3's CPU and GPU.
For about a week my PS3 was running like brand new and the fan would never really go past stage 2. Then I started to notice that any time I transferred a game from my PC to my PS3's internal (I don't have an external hard drive) that after the game would be transferred whether through Open Manager, Gaia or any of the FTP only programs that if I tried to close Open Manager after the transfer it would freeze and force the system to reboot.
After I started noticing this certain games would also start to freeze at different times, for instance Overlord 2 will have a bunch of pixels appear on screen like twinkling stars and then the PS3 will freeze. If I notice the pixels quick enough I can go to the pause screen and still look around in the menus for an indefinite amount of time and the PS3 wont freeze. I can also go to the PS menu and quit the game and start another without issue... But if I were to restart overlord 2 it would freeze again much quicker than before.
That led me to believe that it was Overlord 2 causing the error, but playing a few other games that were much more basic like Trinity Universe would still end up getting the pixels and a freeze. Other games did far more crazy things... Like Star Ocean, I would get a bunch of strange jaggy lines go through the screen alerting me to a freeze within a few seconds but if I got to a save point and save (Which I did on a whim to not lose progress) I can exit the save point and go back to the game to play for another couple of hours before I get another random mess again. Other games still like Call of Duty Black Ops can be played for hours on end without any issue whatsoever.
After the issues started up again I re-cleaned the PS3 and noticed that the heatsink compound I used (Which was a cheap compound) had already started to come off so I cleaned it off and added AS5. This has made no change whatsoever. My PS3 does not seem to overheat anymore like it did before (The fan speed never gets to the third stage) but I'm not sure of what exactly my problem would be. I don't understand why I can play certain games that seem graphically heavy for hours and then games that seem very basic freeze.
If it matters, I'm using the Rockbox Hermes V4b on my ipod nano to JB and usually use Open Manager 2-1I to play my games.
Any help at all would be appreciated immensely.
