If you're feeling cheap, I wrote this up for another user. Total cost is roughly $5, but you need a 12v power source.

1) You want this cable

2) Find a 12v power supply from an external enclosure. Snip the yellow wire on the cable and solder into it (going to the hard drive). People get scared of solder, but really there's nothing to this. You can splice it I guess if you're feeling lazy. All you do is snip both wires, thread em together, heat up with soldering iron, tin with solder. Electrical tape or heat shrink, then done. Simple.
3) Done
Alternatively you may be able to get 12v from the ps3 itself, but it's up to you to rip it apart and find a stable 12v line. I did this with my 360, but I know nothing about the PS3 so I'm keeping it in one piece. Also, I hate using a multimeter.
I know it's ugly, but here's a gallery of my 360 job. The PS3 I just paid the extra dollar on a 640gb.

Those extenders are basically the same thing, only with an enclosure.
