The only thing you aren't allowed to do if you block it on the router is to download game updates (patches, etc) directly from the PS3. You need to download them first on your PC and then install them manually as .pkg
This isn't so bad, though, because most updates coming out now are signed for 3.60.
While it's true you won't be downloading an update off the net if you block playstation.net, the PS3 sends info to various sites when connected, not only playstation.net. This is why the best way to have the PS3 online without issues is the privacy patches.
Especially if you have a second PS3 on OFW, that one wouldn't be able to connect either with your way.
