I got in my hands PS3 fat, CECH C03, 60 GB, 4 USBs ..... 3.70 FW, and since i have slim 3.55 CFW, i tought this could be my for online playing, just to UP it on 4.11 ....

It works fine, laser OK, ports OK, HDMI OK, AVout OK ... only 1 problem.

Its cold, not working all day.

And when you turn it on, it works minute - minute and a half at low speed, and then go faster and faster, and in 2 minutes goes to max speed, and i touch it and its still cold .... i mean, it worked only for 3-4 minutes.

I tried to format hard and restore it in factory settings, bicouse i tought maybe its something in settings left from previous owner, but it didnt help.

Is there any sensor, or something like that, or i even read somewhere that when thermal paste wore out, it could do things like that?

Any help is welcome, thank you.

sounds to me this console has either had ylod or about to get ylod or maybe the fan has been modded chances are it ylod though look up on youtube for a video about ylod try the repair and see how it goes should cost you no more than £5 for the stuff hope you didnt pay to much for the console though as this is only a temp fix and could last a few days or maybe a few years

So fans ramp up to full over 3-4 minutes then it shuts off? Something's overheating. The reason it doesn't feel warm is because whatever is overheating is not transferring heat to the heatsink, could be cracked/dry thermal paste. I would take it apart, clean and add new thermal paste before trying anything else.

No, fan goes in full speed in just 3-4 minutes of console working. If you leave it 20 minutes, it will work like that. But i never leave it in more than 2 minutes , biocuse i feel its not healthy to work in full speed all time ....

as said before check youtube for the ylod video and follow them instructions to change the thermal paste as if you leave it thats whats going to happen meself personally id do this then sell it on but state that what you have done as i think its unfair not to as the problem will keep coming back

PS3 motherboards have a security system, wich makes the fan go full speed just after initializing, its a safety measure to dust off the mainboard components.
Obviously its more noticeable on a fat system rather than a slim one.

Not sure if it can be modded the way other users say. My best recommendation is to put it on a dust-free environment, on a plain surface, near a window or at least 1ft away from the wall.

In example, my PS3s fan remains full speed for ten minutes straight. Then it settles down and turns on every now and then. When I put it on a environment described, it only goes full speed folr wo or three minutes. Then starts the cycle.

I think youre just not used to hear such a noiseful fan. I wouldnt worry if I were you.

I know that .... i used another 40 GB 2 USB for a couple of weeks, but it was much much more quiet than this one ..... you need to play half hour just to start 2nd speed on fan ...

On this one, that is not that .... its something different .... ill try to change thermal paste, some says it could be wore out ....

My first fat 80g ps3 no bc had the same problem. Although I could play, fan noise was really annoying since my ps3 was turned it on. So i opened up, changed thermal paste several times with different brands, clean the dust inside, but no results. After looking for a solution on several forums, a guy with a slim ps3 showing the same problem stated that this occurs because the power supply needs calibration. Inside the power supply there are 2 screws with a mark and the solution was screw them just a bit towards left. When i opened up the power supply of my fat ps3 i noticed the same screws but it was too late because a connector attached to the motherboard broke up so i couldnt find out if this was the real problem. Maybe it works with your ps3. There is a video on youtube.

maybe the paste under the IHS also. you can youtube that also. very easy to do. if your gonna change the old crappy thermal paste on the heat sinks you might as well change it under the IHS also cause the paste on it is crap too. changing the thermal paste on the IHS should/will have a dramatic affect on your ps3's fan speed if that is what the problem is
