Hey guys, my PS3 never actually gets hot but my fan turns itself on after about 5 minutes and doesn't stop, it makes watching movies impossible! My PS3 has been through a lot, it's had 6 YLOD's lol and it currently doesn't have the top casing on it. It has a USB fan connected to the front and angled over the top of the PS3 so it never heats up. However after 5-10 minutes the fan turns itself on full bore and doesn't stop until the PS3 is shut down, I've felt the air out the back and it's only the mildest of warm, not even close to the warm heat my laptop puts out in general use.

I have no clue what can cause the fan to do this. I did read the other day that poor thermal paste on the CPU/GPU can cause the fan to come on, is that true at all? That's the only problem I can come up with. Not long ago when I still had the top cover on I completely dismantled it and got rid of all the dust (I don't remember the PS3 fan being so noisy beforehand) and again last night I looked at it - no dust. Are there any other causes I can look into?

On a side note... would it be completely crazy of me to disconnect the fan altogether and put in a second USB fan to keep everything cool? They aren't noisy but the internal is impossibly loud. The fan connection has 3 wires between the fan and the adapter on the motherboard, are they ALL fan related?

    Cheers guys.

well yeah the first step would be redoing the thermal compound

if its been through 6 ylod's id be happy it still powers on at all.

hi mate i also have this problem playing movies etc is impossable unless i put the ps3 outside my bedroom door lol..
anyway the way i fixed it was to open up the ps3 and get a piece of plastic or cardboard and placeing it on top of the psu i use brown tape to hold it in place then simple close it back up and tighting it as tight as possable, also be carfull not to break your threads on your ps3 when screwing it on as there is alot more pressure on the case to push down the motherboard.. this is just what i did it worked for me might work for you also before doing this open up your ps3 turn it on wait for the fan to start going really loud then puch down on the power supply and see if it slows down if it does do what i did.. let me know how it goes if you try it out
