Ok so I am trying to install custom firmware onto my PS3 and I am at the step where I am recovery mode and I need to plug in a USB drive and update the firmware. However each time I tell it to update, it says

No applicable update data was found.
Insert storage media that contains update data of version
3.55 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons
    at the same time.
My PS3UPDAT.PUP is in the PS3/UPDATE/ folder and I have tried it on three different USB drives but none of them work? :S

1 you guys need to get the right region update for your ps3's. or try this first when you go in recovery system update re-insert your usb sticks because when your ps3's starts up the usb doesn't start up with it you need to reinsert it. or if that doesn't work try the first one above and combine it with it
