Ok, so my PS3 said it was corrupted and it would restore, but that kept looping, so I decided to completely wipe the hard drive and try a fresh install.

When it asks me to put in a USB drive with the update 4.31 or higher it just says the data is corrupted (I've Tried 4.31 and the latest one), I've also tried with the original hard drive I had and it gives me the same thing.

Any ideas what I can do?

Ok, I'll try that, I've got a feeling it's dead though.

Edit. Fat32 makes it YLOD, I put back in un-partitioned unformatted Drive and it went back to before, asking for update file saying it was corrupt.

I've had a similar problem, the only difference is mine will install the fw and just reboot back to the same screen asking for it like it's not even installing. It doesn't even try to format the drive if I wipe it out.

Yeah, I think the console is at fault not the hard drive, looks like I need a new PS3.

Right, I tried burning off the latest update on a CD and that's giving me something different. At this moment, it's currently Formatting, which is much more then I had before. So fingers crossed.

I've tried all options in that menu, they either cannot access the drive or just reboot the system.
