PS3 Been Sitting for a Long Time. Need Advice For Setting It Back Up
PS3 Been Sitting for a Long Time. Need Advice For Setting It Back Up –

first of all thanks for any help, replies, suggestions.
i realize a lot of this will be noob stuff and i spend a lot of time on forums just not PS3 forums so please excuse my knowledge.
here is what i have:
1. i have the PS3 edition with the SDcard reader that is hidden behind an opening drawer in the front and 4 usb ports and i believe it was a 60GB but not sure. it was one of the first models.
2. i have not upgraded it i do not believe since i was able to still run linux on it. maybe i have but at least not in the last year. i mention that as i do hack other things and not sure if that is beneficial or not?
what i would like to do with it now:
1. play games obviously or at least let kids that visit play. do you still have to load individual disks or have things advanced so i can use a HDD like the Wii?
2. watch things like Netflix, HULU, Youtube, etc...
3. use it to access and play all my movies (avi, mkv, iso, VideoTS, etc) which are stored on a HDD external box that is directly connected to my router. these are setup like home > movies > name of movie > file as well as TV shows which are the same setup. for reference my house runs all Mac's if that matters but i do have 1 Windows 7 older desktop setup that i use when required for certain tasks.
i know these answers are all on here if i look and please dont answer if you are irritated that i didnt use the search feature first
basically with work and kids i dot have the time i use to with my other electronic hobbies to research to figure all this out and get caught up. i am techy and can figure things out so i dont need an instruction manual i am really just looking for something that guides me like "get whatever program, hack it, or if thats not needed whatever and that will allow you to do what your looking for"
there may also not be anything i can do and last i was into the PS3 there want much alternative stuff to do to it and it was really locked down so that is why i ask.
thanks for your time again and any guidance.

First things first....
1- Depending on which method you use, you may or may not need an actual PS3 blu-ray game disc in the drive in order for your backups to work off of the HDD. For instance, with Kmeaw CFW (custom firmware) 3.55, your best bet would be to have a disc in the system while trying to launch your games. On the other hand, if you purchase a Cobra USB dongle, pretty much all of the games will work fine without a disc in the system. Even games that do not work with Kmeaw might work with the Cobra USB. Their is also a newer device out that allows you to play the latest games via individual fixes, known a the True Blue dongle.
2- Well, yes and no. If you are on the latest OFW (official firmware), then you can use these applications. If you are on CFW, you can use a program like PlayOn.TV to access you NetFlix and Hulu accounts, as well as many others. You can use the internet no matter what CFW or OFW you are on, so YouTube should be fine.
3- A jailbroken console is the best way to access all of your media I suppose. But there are other ways. There is a PS3 Media Server that can stream movies to your PS3 and other devices. There is also something called Orb BR, which allows you to access Hulu, NetFlix, and MKV files, but it has not been confirmed if it works on CFW. One of the representitive for the Orb BR visited our site, and said that it might work, but he was not 100% sure.
Now, if you want to hack it, let me know and I will give you some links to get you started and setup.
PS: Like the Avatar and Name, good choices!

thanks tthousand that is the kind of welcome i was hoping for
i am open for advice really. as with most things i will probably get into it, get it all setup and then it will sit lol it is just what happens when i need a challenge.
i havent updated it for at least a year and when i get home i will post the firmware version i am on. it is possible that visiting kids may have done an upgrade i really have no idea. wiping off the dust tonight.
link away and i will follow your advice. jailbreak or unlocked always sounds good to my ears.

Well, might as well jailbreak the SOB, you can always go official later on.
First off, go the settings menu, and look for the system information to find out what OFW you are on. If you are on 3.55 or less, you are in luck. 3.56 or above, you will need to solder a chip to the system in order to downgrade it to 3.55 and use CFW.
Alright, now that that is out of the way, you will need a FAT32 format USB device (PS3 does not read NTFS, or FATex). Then update your system to OFW 3.55 (Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!), followed by the CFW 3.55 of your choice. You can try REBUG (link in my sig), NFW (link in my sig), or just the standard kmeaw ( http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/cfw...ll-pack-77294/ (CFW kmeaw + OFW 3.55 + GAIA 2.05 ready to install pack) )... or try them all and see which one you like.
After you are on CFW, next you will want some programs. Ones that I will suggest for your setup are multiMAN, Showtime, and the PS3 Media Server. Also, the latest spoofer from REBUG to prevent the kids from accidentally updating the system.
multiMAN - multiMAN - multifunctional tool for your PS3 (Game and File manager/FTP/AVCHD/BDMV) - PS3Hax Network - Playstation 3 Hacks and Mods
Showtime Official - https://github.com/andoma/showtime/downloads
Showtime Unofficial - Just look at the front page, I am sure there is one there now!
Showtime WITH PLUGINS PRE-INSTALLED - http://psx-scene.com/forums/content/...spt-team-1672/
PS3 Media Server- PS3 Media Server
Spoofer can be found at the REBUG website (linked in my sig)
Let me know what else you are interested in, and I can give you some more links.

PS. You can find an application to disable CINAVIA (spelling?) protection on your PS3, as that may prevent you from watching certain movies. You should be able to find that at the REBUG site also. Unless you choose NFW or REBUG, as both of those have CINAVIA (spelling?) disabled already

Good luck, and Enjoy!!!
3.55 OFW first, then CFW. Don't forget to SPOOF
Oh yeah, BDEMU2 for mulitMAN, you can find that in the first link in my sig. Install that after you instal multiMAN.

everything went smooth. your guidance helped a lot.
the PS3 streamed every type of video file i had so that is going to work out great.
so i had a quick couple of questions for you when you have a minute.
1. i setup SPOOF but if i were to try and go to the store it says you need to update and gives me the options of "yes or no" if i have the spook active will that prevent it from actually updating even if a kid hits update and yes?
2. now i would like to setup an external HDD and rip the games i have. i assume i can do this and if so is there a guide you recommend?
3. will games be able to get updates? new weapons or courses etc?
4. i see games listed on my newsgroup site for download. what is the scoop on that? do they just download and place on HDD and play? is there a guide to that.
5. if i saw something i wanted to do and it required a different CFW what happens if i change? do i just install right over my other one?
i am asking you because opinions can vary and a quick reply with your recommendations to a guide or whatever make sit easier and saves me time.
much appreciated and i am close to leaving you alone

First off, I am glad to help you, and super happy that another ps3 has made the switch from OFW to CFW
Answers:
1- That is what it is supposed to do, prevent it. I have not tried that option, but I would hope that is how the spoofer works. You have the 4.0 spoof, not the 3.73 spoof right???
2- Just plug in a FAT32 drive, and use multiMAN to rip the game to the HDD
3- You can still download the updates/patches, but for DLC, that is a no most of the time. Sometimes people are able to crack and release the DLC, like for Mortal Kombat. You can download the patches online, and install them via the package install option, or you can download them with your PS3 connected to the internet. But sometimes the latest patches prevent the game from working on CFW. Just go to the game data utility and delete the update.
4- I can tell you that we do not condone trading downloaded games here, but if you want to figure that out for yourself... once you rip a game to your external, go look at it on your PC. You should know what to do from there.
5- Well, you should go to OFW first, and then to another CFW just to make sure nothing goes wrong. People will also say you should QA Flaq your system, which will stay until you take it off... it basically allows you to have access to developers options, while picking the CFW of your choice. It also helps when swapping between CFWs I have heard. But other than that, yeah it is as simple as swapping the one cfw for the next, nothing should happen to your files.
